NAVY REPLACES T-34 WITH T-6A TEXAN II
It's the end of an era at Pensacola. The Beechcraft T-34 will disappear soon from the Navy's training base at Naval Air Station Pensacola in Florida to be replaced by Raytheon Aircraft's T-6A Texan II. The first Navy training class to use the T-6A began in late June using 15 of the aircraft. Ultimately the Navy will buy 328 of the turboprop single-engine trainers. The Air Force has used the aircraft since 2001. It is also flying as a military trainer in Canada and Greece. The Navy and Air Force will buy a total of 800 T-6As by 2017. Computer technology allows the aircraft to perform like a jet fighter, and the cockpit can be equipped with the same advanced digital avionics as frontline fighters.

Yep,

Its just for NFO training right now. SNA's won't see the T-6 for another 5 years or so. Whiting gets them after NAS Pensacola and Corpus is last.

Read the specs at http://www.chinfo.navy.mil/navpalib/factfile/aircraft/air-t6a.html and at http://www.airforce-technology.com/projects/texan/.

Sounds like a sweet little platform. Lots of improvements over the T-34. Finally, a glass cockpit primary trainer.

Good times.
