What's not to like about polyester?

I got maybe 4 sets of working khakis when I was a graduating/new ENS. Never wore them a single day. I do wish I had bought a life time supply of the associated garrison covers though. They are far better than what you can buy at the NEX now IMO, lightweight, etc.
 
One aspect of service uniforms that I always likes was you could tell the a lot by one's ribbon stacks.
I once had a meeting with a BGen who's stack said he was a HQ deck jockey,
When I spoke with his Aide, a Maj, a quiet and unassuming professional, that man's stack said he'd not only been there-done that, but got a Purple Heart and a Silver Star for his troubles.
I'd venture to say that some of the biggest braggards have the smallest stacks.

Not sure if the Navy still has the phrase "Khaki on the flightline" but on the Tripoli, the deck crew (LSEs, grapes, etc,) really tightened things up when there was khaki on the flight deck, especially if it was their section Chief.

As an LSO, I wore mine often enough. But this was in the late 1900s.
I have a dumb question about paddles. If the ship is going to make a sudden change of course, are you told over the radio/intercom so that you can communicate it to whoever is in the slot trying to land? I assume so, but..
 
Are 100% polyester CNTs no longer a thing.

Not since the early 2000's. The Navy switched to some sort of supposed poly-wool blend that was supposed to be better. I never partook and just wore the one set of Abbott's I had the few times I needed khakis over the next 18 years, which was rare after flight school.

The captain would call down to my headset (CAG Paddles) to tell me he had to make a turn for winds, sea-space, or traffic. He'd typically say, "Hey, I've gotta turn after we catch this guy," or "If I make it gently, can you catch him in a turn?" Sometimes the captain himself wouldn't call, but the Boss would call after a conversation with the bridge.

And for single spot Helo decks, the ship will often decide to turn rather abruptly the minute you are established on a short final!

He said working khakis. Maybe that means wash khakis. I got issued wash khakis in OCS and never wore them once after. Any duty requiring khakis was expected to be in the service khaki. I never experienced the old ones but found the poly wool khakis to be very uncomfortable. I haven't worn them once since going SELRES.

I remember fondly the "trunk shows" from Abbott's, Boston Uniform Company, etc. You hand selected the fabrics you wanted, measurements, fit, accessories, etc.
