Need Advice on ASTB

Hi guys,

So I took the ASTB back in May and scored a 6/6/7 and 55. I only studied for about two nights to get this score and took it on little sleep. My plan was to retake it this Friday (before the new one is implemented) to boost my scores and make me even more competitive. I have been studying the past week and planned to study up until Friday. I already feel I have a much better grasp of the material this time around. My plan is to only apply as SNA.

However, I just met with my Recruiting officer and he said that the Navy recently lowered the competitive OAR score to a 38 or something near there and he didn't think I'd have any issues getting accepted and advised to not take the test again. Do you guys agree and think its not worth the risk of potentially getting a lower score (though unlikely) and to just follow his suggestion. I went to Colby College and had a 3.5 GPA, I know GPA is secondary to ASTB in applying for SNA, but just for your background information.

Please let me know your thoughts!

Thank you!

Your GPA looks good and your ASTB scores look good. I had a 3.8 (Journalism) and a 6/7/7 55 and got picked up for SNA/SNFO/SWO. That was last October, and I know the boards are always looking for different stuff, but I'm pretty sure the numbers you posted are good ones for any of the boards I've been aware of.

I'll give the mic back to NavyOffRec since he actually knows what he's talking about, though. :)

I haven't submitted yet, was holding off for the 6 month wait to get my waiver in for LASIK and then get to MEPS (which I am in the process of doing this week). I had planned to just retake to boost my scores, but now he has me thinking that it might not be worth the risk? But I also see minimal risk. What are your thoughts NavyOffRec?

My opinion, your decision! You're going SNA only, your GPA & OAR fine, ASTB is average, but still a good competitive package; however, inasmuch as you seem confident that being much better prepared for a retest, you could significantly improve your ASTB, I would go for it. Only because for aviation slots, the higher the ASTB numbers, the better the 'odds' of selection. I guess it depends on your willingness to take risks. Tune in to all the advice you receive here, then make an educated decision on how to proceed. Just my 10.3766 cents worth, best of luck!;)

With my advice and $1.08, you can get a medium coffee at Mickey 'D's, but not at Starbucks!

I would agree with BzB on this one, throw it against the wall to see if it sticks.

Thank you both, I really appreciate the input. I am just going to take it on Friday. I will let you know how it turns out!

Well that was disappointing, scored about the exact same (even went down a point in OAR). Took Form 4 today and got a 7/7/8 54. What most certainly screwed me was the Mechanical section. I was scoring nearly perfectly on all the practice tests (Barrons/Arco/etc.) but this exam was so much harder (no questions on gears, pistons, etc.) It was a lot of difficult questions that are hard for me even to remember and had never heard of. Math and Reading were relatively easy I thought. The Aviation supplication was a bit tough, some really hard questions and random ones like the FAA weight ratio for something or another (options were from 2.4 to 3.8).

Oh well, at least I tried....like Teddy said better to do this than the cold and timid souls who knew neither victory nor defeat.

I still think I have a strong package and at the end of the day hopefully it won't even matter!

7/7/8 > 6/6/7. I see it as an improvement. Good luck on the board!
