I'm not sure I understand the question. If a crew and vehicle from the future was blown up in the past, and then everyone else from the future that's alive (ie, everyone on the ship) returns at the same point that they left (minus CAG and Mrs. Robinson's daughter), why would that crew affect the future? The Senator and his aide were already dead in the original history and the CAG would just have a double for 40 years. They already established that the future WAS altered by Mr. Tideman (CAG) before they even left.

Obviously time travel stories eventually end up messing something up (even Looper), but The Final Countdown is actually a reasonably tidy time travel story...except for Soon-Tek Oh and his wingman.

No, it makes perfect sense. The H-3 bubbas are from the present (future in 41) so their death in the past has no bearing on the present (future in 41). Their death will have impacts on the future's future.

If time travel is ever invented it will require a whole new vocabulary and tenses.

Fourteen years later, Soon-Tek Oh was supposed to push George McFly out of the way of the oncoming car after George fell out of the tree.

Oh no...I still have questions. What if one of the HS crew had children? Do they disappear in the future? Will their 2nd grade classmate miss them? When the Nimitz arrives back in Pearl (in the future present) everyone is just happy. Do they remember the hello crew? Will the IG ask.."Hey, you left with four SH-3's but came back with three!"

Better yet, the movie takes place in 1980. That means this entire crew died before their parents even married in real time. Will they still meet? More importantly....why didn't any VF or VA guys bite the dust? Even the nugget got his A-7 to the deck after flying through the storm.

Seems anti-rotorite to me.

No, it's not like the H-3 crew didn't exist in the future. Their deaths in the past doesn't erase their existence in the future prior to their entry in to the vortex. So, if They had kids then their kids will still exist since they still knocked up their wives before entering the vortex. As far as the H-3 crews' families it doesn't matter that they died in 1941 or their present, their death will have the same impact.

Closed-loop vs many-worlds.

Many-worlds: Changes in the past create a new, parallel timeline. Eric Bana kills Thor and the Enterprise winds up looking like an Apple Store, but Old Spock still exists and still remembers William Shatner.
Mutable timeline: Changes in the past create a new timeline, erasing the old one. Marty pushes George out of the way of his grandfather's car and if the divergence goes too far, he'll literally disappear from existence.
Closed-loop (or immutable) timeline: There is only one timeline and it's impossible to change it. Soon Tek-Oh and his wingmen were always shot down by Jolly Rogers Tomcats, but presumably were just written off as lost at sea. Senator Chapman always disappeared before Pearl Harbor - CAG wrote about it in his book. Mr Tideman was always CAG - his knowledge of history and technology allowed him to become a mysterious defense industry giant. Nothing they did changed the future, because it was always what happened.

Arrival is a great mind-fuck when it comes to closed-loop timelines.

Exactly. Since the movie has subscribed to the Closed-Loop model, it actually did it pretty well, especially in light of its bad acting and relatively limited budget!

I still would love to know the story behind why the Big XO's dialogue was done entirely with ADR.
