they are in the fleet right now being tested by active duty sailors in an asortment of commands. Basically an evaluation phase.

The point of the camoflage isn't to blend in. To the best of my knowledge, the point of the camoflage is to look cool. Sailors taking the uniform survey think we don't look cool enough.
That is overgenralizing, but the purpose of the camoflage is purely asthetic.
I, for one, hate it.

Personally i don't like 'em

while i'll be the frist to agree that dungees and coveralls need to go, I think they could've done better.

First off the camo pattern is silly if not dangerous, I have a hard enough time spotting a guy in the water wearing a red float-coat much less blue and gray Camoflauge

Second they are trying to take our command ball caps, and I can't let that go without a fight. I still have my "Recruit" cap and the "Navy" cap that replaced it when I gratuated boot.
While i can't speak for everyone i know i'm not alone when i say that I take a lot of pride in my cap, pride in my command, and pride in the Navy.

but now that i've said my piece i have to admit that BDUs are extremely comfortable and low maintnance.

I'd like to see a BDU-like uniform solid color, blue, gray, whatever. Maybe an opitional kahki for Chiefs and Officers topped by a command ball cap.

I'm a neutral third party (consider me a journalist) but I am all for practicality in uniforms.

It is obvious that there is no reason to be "camouflage" on a ship - if the enemy is that close, you've got bigger issues than blending in with the boat. So why not come up with a pattern that will help mask sailors when they are serving on shore? When they do serve on shore, they need to wear combat camouflage uniforms, anyway, so why not kill two birds with one stone?

Wow. Going off of the new uniforms I've seen for the services I've reached the conclusion that there is a secret conspiracy to make everybody wearing one look like dick. That's a bummer...especially that new Army uniform, though these aren't too far behind on the suck-o-meter.

I thought the patterns on the new navy utilities were to hide stains that typically rendered solid color coveralls unservicable.

So I guess the pattern on the new service/khaki uniform is a coffee-stain pattern?

That was my understanding as well, the digital pattern so far has the edge in the tests over the standard cammie pattern with paint drips and mechanical fluids.

KBay...I wear khakis almost every day and you are 100% correct, my coffee spills are undetectable.

The color for khaki was initially chosen because it was invented by servicemen in the desert spilling coffee on their white uniforms.

... Of course, that was on purpose ...for camoflage :icon_smil

The word "khaki" is actually derived from the Hindi for "dust-colored." Invented by the Brits in India. Your useless trivia for the day . . .
