I am glad that now your wife is having a child you can start thinking about her...

As a SNFO in training, if you dont want to be one, DOR now because your just taking up space.

I second that. Think about getting through training first. Worry about all that other junk later, preferably after you earn your wings.

GO STATE!!!
Sure, a retirement check is nice, but I want to excel in life not just retire and suck off the government's tit.

Besides, you can't survive on a military pension alone. At least not here in CA.

Of course, you can stay in for 30+ years, put stars on your shoulder, and retire as CNO one day. At that point, the government's got a big ole tit.:D

I'm not worried about the training. That other "junk" is the rest of your life. I asked a simple question, what lies for an NFO after retirement. Plain and simple.

I still don't understand how this straight-forward question was misconstrued.
It has nothing to do with wanting to be a FO or any other BS arguements that were cooked up.

P.S. A reserve NCC recently told me that more people retire from the reserves than active duty........

Could one of you guys explain to the "un-washed":

What is buying back? How does that work?

Is retirement from the reserves the same pay as retirement from active duty?

Yo

This guy just all of sudden because he is having a child worries about what he is going to do after he does his service, like being a Pilot guarantees a flying job after he gets out.

Maybe you should read my original post. I never said being a pilot meant a guaranteed job. All I asked was what lies ahead for the retired NFO. Ease up shit tuber.

You asked a legitimate question. It's the internet, there's gonna be useless postings. Take the high road and move on.

Question asked and answered. If you have further questions, start a new thread.

Not mentioned in all the very good posts above is a very significant advantage to any officer and most enlisted men looking for any type of government or government contractor job. They have a secret clearance or higher. For a civilian off the street to get a security clearance through his civilian employer will take well over a year and cost a boat load of money to the employer. It is much easier and cheaper to hire a guy with a clearance, and a record of keeping that clearance, and then just teach him anything else he needs to know on the job or in house. I know a NFO that came from the EP-3 community with a degree in Industrial Ed (shop teacher), He got a job offer to manage a new artillery fuse program for a defense contractor. No engineering degree, not former Army, knew nothing about artillery. But he did have the secruity clearance and managment experience.

Hey, welcome to Airwarriors. It's what we do here. Personally, my very first reaction based on your initial post, before reading any of the replies, was that this guy's looking to DOR and is coming to AW for validation. My reaction was based mainly on how your "priorities" had changed. In any case, I gave you the benefit of the doubt. I only express this now as an attempt to explain to you how your post was miscontrued. Take it for what it's worth.

Now, whether you requested it or not, there's a sh!t ton of good advice in this thread. Whether you stay in the navy or get out after your initial committment, your future is YOUR responsibility. That's the bad news. The good news is that your future is YOUR responsibility. Don't let someone (including yourself) try to pigeon-hole you into some post NFO career requirement. Opportunities are boundless.
