NFO or pilot

Hi all, I'm a firstie at the academy, and its down to the wire, we enter our service selection preferences this week. Right now I am leaning towards NFO as my first choice. I'm an aerospace engineering major and have been on the IC sailing team (little boats) the whole time here.
I just want to make sure my reasons for wanting to go NFO seem sound. First, when I'm sailing I like crewing better than driving, and the crew is the one who keeps track of the big picture information and feeds it to the driver, so that he can focus on driving the boat fast. You tell him about windshifts, other boats ect... Typically I drive because most crews are 130 lbs or less, but I really like it when I get a chance to crew. I felt that I might for the same reason enjoy NFO.
My other primary reason is that I'm very interested in both electronic warfare, and being a Growler (or prowler) or EP3 FO seems like the best way to be involved with that. My question is does this reasoning seem sound to those of you out there in the community. Some of my classmates look at me like I'm crazy for putting down 1. NFO 2. Pilot, since everyone else seems to do it the other way, and I just want to check with those of you who have done it. Thanks,
Jeff Sharp

Jeff,

First off, welcome to the boards and good luck w/ service selection.

Your reasons seem sound to me. If that's the way you feel, go ahead and put NFO down as your first choice.

In flight school, (not sure about the fleet cuz I haven't gotten there yet) that's alot of what you'll be doing... figuring out the best way to get from A to B and telling the IP where to go, figureing out what the wids are doing and correcting etc.

I put down Pilot first and NFO second, and ended up a SNFO. I'm loving it, and if I had to do it again, I'd put NFO down first. I like being in the air and not having to do the pilot stuff, but at the same time be a vital member of the crew.

Cheers,
Bubba

Jeff,
Were you in Newport, RI this summer by chance? If so you really need to ditch those gay belts, everyone was making fun of them. :)
Good luck and go pilot!

Obviously, I am not an NFO, but I would say that you have one of the most realistic views from outside aviation about pilots and NFOs. It seems to me that that your view is easily accurate enough that you are making a good choice for your service selection.

Thanks a lot for your feedback. Yes I was in newport for the start of the newport-bermuda race this summer, but I usually race the smaller boats. The offshore team gave me a free ride to bermuda, so I was happy to wear a gay belt for a few hours.

^^^O I see, you are not a member of the "gay belt club", you were just pretending. How was Bermuda this Summer?

I just got picked up on a Air Contract/NFO for class 194 in January. It wasn't my first choice, pilot was. But I will tell you that I am just honored to have the oppurtunity to become a Marine Officer, let alone a chance at the aviation community. I wanted to get selected as a stick monkey as people say, but I didn't, but the bottom line is, how many people get a shot at flying in a performance aircraft. Not too many. I know a lot of individuals that would love to be an Officer in the military, let alone a NFO. I think NFO is an awsome oppurtunity, and wouldn't pass is up for anything.

This is one of the best replies I have seen from someone with only two posts. BZ. :D

Congratulations. You never know, there may be an opprotunity to change to pilot at TBS or API (medical issues not withstanding) if that's what you want to do. Either way, you'll really enjoy yourself. Welcome aboard.
