NFO or pilot

JBird

TBS Charlie Co./ SNFO
Thanks fellas. Nope, I am both pilot and NFO qualified medically, and academicly, just didn't get selected pilot. More than likely it was my PFT score, a little to low for pilot, but that is alright. I'm excited and thrilled to get SNFO select. If I do get the chance down the road for pilot, great. If not, I plan on being the best NFO out there. But, first things first, OCS baby, then TBS. I will focus on NFO a year from now or so. Thanks again guys for the insight.

There are annual boards for field-accession aviator slots. Basically it is bubbas from any other fleet MOS that go to pilot training. When I went through primary several years ago, one of the IPs had a brother who was a WSO that was going through primary after aquiring one of these field-accession slots. Like you said though, first things first, one hurdle at a time, and enjoy all of it, because so many would love to be doing it. Errr.

Hi all, I'm a firstie at the academy, and its down to the wire, we enter our service selection preferences this week. Right now I am leaning towards NFO as my first choice. I'm an aerospace engineering major and have been on the IC sailing team (little boats) the whole time here.
I just want to make sure my reasons for wanting to go NFO seem sound. First, when I'm sailing I like crewing better than driving, and the crew is the one who keeps track of the big picture information and feeds it to the driver, so that he can focus on driving the boat fast. You tell him about windshifts, other boats ect... Typically I drive because most crews are 130 lbs or less, but I really like it when I get a chance to crew. I felt that I might for the same reason enjoy NFO.
My other primary reason is that I'm very interested in both electronic warfare, and being a Growler (or prowler) or EP3 FO seems like the best way to be involved with that. My question is does this reasoning seem sound to those of you out there in the community. Some of my classmates look at me like I'm crazy for putting down 1. NFO 2. Pilot, since everyone else seems to do it the other way, and I just want to check with those of you who have done it. Thanks,
Jeff Sharp

Does your OOM make you a realistic candidate for a pilot slot?
