Thanks Steve, but actually I'm quite content with the idea of becoming an NFO. In fact, I'm better than content...I'm downright excited! If I were in Wakani's position, on the other hand, I might not be so content. Maybe I'm just complicated, LOL.

I think you guys should be picky and turn down slots, more for those of us who want any slot to serve the country. To bad the non-prior's dont see the bigger picture and know the workings from the inside, so please. TURN DOWN YOUR SLOTS!!

Bryant, I thought you already had a BDCP slot?

grouch: you certainly had the credentials for af. they probably didnt take you cause of that whole dumbass thing i mentioned. hey, if i do decide to write for leno, i could use some help...if we were to team up i think our combined efforts could really payoff.
sincerely,
dingleberries

wakani: in all seriousness i think the advice stacy gave you is good. the point being (there is a thread somewhere on this issue) im not sure how it looks to turn down nfo to reapply for sna. i dont claim to know but it could be a concern. enlisting would be good if you want to do that. however, i certainly wouldnt do it if you have no desire of being in the enlisted field. that seems to me like the same thing as going nfo for the sole purpose of laterally transferring to sna later. the navy needs good enlisted personnel as well and probably wouldnt be fond of someone who just wants it as a career ladder.

Sigh. Good advice.

Maybe will just finish Phd in astro-physics and enlist but demand at least paygrade E-3.

sigh.

Okay, now you've piqued my curiousity. What would possess you to get a Ph.D. in astrophysics when you're apparently hell-bent on getting an SNA slot? I'm puzzled, because I myself have been down the Ph.D. road (check my profile), and it ain't no fun at all...unless your goal in life is to become a career academic. A Ph.D. is not going to make you any more competitive for an SNA slot than an M.S..

Are you hoping to become an astronaut? If so, you should know that you don't need to be an NA to apply to the astronaut corps. Obviously only NAs can become shuttle pilots, but NFOs and even restricted line officers can (and do!)apply to NASA to become mission specialists.

just dont give up on everything cause it's tough going right now...as i mentioned ealier, it just might be a matter of patience on your part. ive been trying to find a way to be a pilot in the military for as long as i can remember but was always told to fly a kite since i didnt have the eyes. now that situation has changed. just focus on what you want and figure out the best way to get there.

Thanks Stacy.

Actually i am not "hell bent on SNA". Actually, aero engineering is my "thing". UAV's are my passion.

My though process was NA to enable Test Pilot School, along with a lot of real world stick experience. Test Pilot School then Aero Engineering Duty Officer. Because slots were closed for NA, NFO was suggested. Through the good offices of this forum, understand that NFO will not get me where I want to go, or had been led to believe. i tend to agree with your points, inter alia, that the Phd (Piled Higher and Deeper) route is more "running around the track" that am interested in doing. Waiting is also not an option, never should be, if one can avoid it.

Ergo Rod Stewart and "Maggie May" came to mind.

Thanks again to all.

Perhaps someone can correct me here, but I don't see any reason why an NFO couldn't become an AEDO. They are certainly eligible for TPS. However, if you're looking to work on developing UAVs, I believe the most direct route is as a civilian through a defense contractor. Your M.S. in engineering plus a security clearance (possibly gained via military service) should allow you to get a foot in the door. If you'd like to go that way, it wouldn't matter whether you took a commission as an NFO or as an NA.

NFOs can redesignate to AEDO and as said here, go to TPS. No reason why a NFO from TPS can't get involved in UAVs, especially if that NFO has a "passion for UAVs".

In 25 years i would like to command an Aircraft Carrier. Essex size, maybe 50K tons, with high performance propulsion, say 45kts cruise.

No manned aircraft, only UAV's, Providing realtime targeting, BDA, retargeting, continuous targeting, high onstation time. Supported by concentric networks of information, all source. Driven by GTS (Global Targeting Satellite) a constellation 30 birds, similar to the 24 constelation of GPS.

The largest problem is those that say it cannot be done. Similar to the "couch" generals of the last gulfwar that said we need "more boots on the ground", " ... need to line up like real soldiers, like Lee and Grant did, in rows and columns ... ".

Fire when ready, Gridley!

Ummm...okay. So, I'm still not seeing how NFO is going to prevent you from accomplishing your ultimate career goals. Listen to wink, he's the guy that's really in the know here.

Stacy. Hey, i do like your positive attitude. Goes a long way in this otherwise gray world, no pun intended.

Thanks, and do appreciate it.
