Eh, I have vision jsut as bad and my doc puts me on the 20/ scale, what kind of doc do you have?

Civilian. Haven't seen him in about a year, had him growing up back home in MD. NOMI just checked my glasses and made sure I was 20/20 with them on.

In a real vision test....it is not always the same letter, I have seen/not seen K, R, S etc.....
Right ... but it was for > 20 years .... :) NAMI chart, 20/20 line, circa 1965-1988:

K C D R N ... Z S H O V .....

...how do you think I passed on a "bad" day ???

I know a few pilots who did the same, they never changed the chart on the wall at Whidbey as far as I know......;)

It didn't really matter to me though, the exchange with the Corpsman administering the yearly vision test usually went something like this:

Corpsman: "Tell me the line furthest down you can read sir"

Me: "The top letter, K" (If I squint I can barely make it out, it is pretty blurry though :D)

Corpsman: "Okaaayyy, do you want to put your glasses on sir?"

Yeah, I don't think the Navy wants you to become a pilot if you can't see the boat without your glasses......;)

The Navy doesn't want it ??? How about ME ???

That's how I quit smoking cigarettes in 1974 ... smoked 2-3 packs a day for 10 years .... night vision was something like 200 & 1/2 .... I tried to come aboard one bad night without my glasses --- I'd dropped 'em under the ejection seat --- the glasses, not the cigarettes ... :)

Never had a cigarette since ....

I bet the B/N was happy about that!

You got a problem with me?
Holy Cow. I thought cause I had to wear them to drive that I wouldn't ever be in anything more than a helicopter or airliner but like alot of times I was wrong. I just hope they don't change the standards in the next 4 years lol.

I've never heard of anyone getting a general for PRK.

You've not heard right... Though they do give you "eye coke"... those drops do a damn good job of numbing your eye.. completely.

They don't give a general b/c you have to focus on a little red dot... and you can't focus when you're out cold... Least that's how the doc explained it to me.

So then I have heard right, right? ;)

Its up to you. I could have gone NFO with glasses, however, I opted to get PRK. There are pro's and con's to both. Check out the PRK forum and see for yourself.

Alot of it will come down to your current prescription and if your eyes are with in PRK limitations.

@Brett... I was trying to play on words there... didn't exactly come out right. But you got the point, so mission accomplished.

Well to me getting PRK would be the safer bet if your gonna be a pilot or NFO. Mainly because what happens if you glasses fall off and your lens break plus glasses are a pain. I want to be a helicopter pilot, can they fly with glasses or are glasses only for NFOs?
