I'm an Officer Candidate slated for the Class 191 slot this January. I have a good background, and good test scores (am taking the ASTB this Thursday, scored 1550 on SATs). However, I have never flown an airplane: no pilot's license, nothing. Do I still have a shot at becoming a pilot, or my lack of experience kill me right out of the gates? This is probably a stupid question to which the answer is no (to killing my chances), but I wanted to get someone else's thoughts on this, and I respect the posters on airwarriors a lot. Semper Fi!

This topic has been discussed ad infinitum on AW. Bottom line, it makes absolutely no difference, so don't sweat it. For more info, feel free to use the search function, then address any specific questions you might have to the rest of us.

Good times,

Brett

I'm noticing the emergence of a nicer, more caring Airwarriors. I think it stemmed from Schnuggapups "Bill and Ted" response (not his, specifically, but one of the posts in the thread). Times they are' a changin'.

As said above, you dont need to worry. Many show up with no flight training at all. Im still in college but from what i heard, it takes about 10-15 flights to get people on the same page (with or without flight time).

With me, I have a couple hundred hours flying cessnas (the general aviation way). When i go to navy flight training (hopefully), it is going to be very different and might be even harder for me to come back down and learn it the "military way." (its going to be hard to learn those overhead breaks without doing my usual 45 degree entry to a left hand pattern). So if you have 600 hours or 0, you will all get to the same page quickly.

Also, from what i get from this site, if you show up to training with 0 hours, they send you off to a local FBO and get you to solo, or private, i forgot. It is around these threads somewhere. Just keep on searching.

OCC 191 Select
Yeah, also since you haven't taken the ASTB yet? Do you mean you will be applying for 191? I would try to apply for 190 if you can. The gouge is that Fall OCC has more air slots than the January Classes traditionally. Plus, I live in NOVA and I can't imagine a winter at OCS. Burrrrr..........

I knew a Marine that had finished TBS and was in our AI class. He was a Music major in college. So no flying skills required.

ps. Unfortuanetly, This Marine got attrited after he got drunk at Cacks, got into a fight and drove his jeep over a couple of Harleys in front of the saloon. (not sure if it's still there, but it was a biker bar on the corner of 98 about a mile out the main gate)
He drove on sparking rims the short ride to the main gate with a mad crowd chasing him....

Drink responsibly!!!

Thank you everybody for the responses, especially for being patient with someone who just couldn't find the answer in previous threads (I know they're there somewhere). I can't go OCC 190 because I recently got the PRK surgery, so I need to wait six months before I can continue the application.

If that had been my bike, attrition would have been the least of his concern. Dismemberment and disembowelment would have been eminently more likely :icon_rage

i went from 0 hours to 260-ish hours (ifs incl) and wings in two years. in that time, i've learned how to fly 4 different airplanes, civilian and military (PA-28, C-172, T-34C, T-45A), including a tactical jet, fly in close proximity to another aircraft day, night, good/bad weather, drop bombs, _basic_ bfm, and land on an aircraft carrier... so no, prior experience is NOT required to succeed in the program... just a drive to succeed and hard work along the way.
