Back to the experience part of this thread. If you'd like to increase your chances of going to sunny Oklahoma and party with the Air Force, try to get your pilot's license and a 100 hrs of experience before OCS. If you'd like to sit on Pensacola's lovely sand beaches, don't sweat it, have fun, let the military pay for your flying....

If you wanna have an advance knowledge on how to fly and you can afford to fund to get flight time then go ahead. But,as they have said it's not neccessary.

Not saying every company is the same, but ours (alpha 02-03) didn't pick Vance guys according to flight time. They just randomly picked 5 dudes, 3 of them got to do IFS the other 2 started API right away. On the other hand, I have heard of companies sending guys with the most hours......so take it for what it's worth.

Our company took volunteers for its two Vance slots, and then went by the two highest academic averages amongst the volunteers to decide who actually went. (I think they only had two volunteers, anyway...)

There is not one deciding factor that will guarantee you an opportunity to go to Vance. All you can do is take the steps to help your case: Get some prior flight time (since that seems to be a factor for some companies), study for/kick butt on the ASTB, dominate at OCS (and more importantly, TBS), and let the TBS staff know all along that you want to go to Vance. Will that seal it for you? Maybe not. The military is part meritocracy and part luck/timing. If the time is right and you work for it, you'll get it.

Don't go to Vance, do yourself a favor, I have heard nothing good from guys coming from there....

Wait, I thought the idea was to not go to Vance?

I didn't say where to go/where not to go. Go where you want to go, and do what you wanna wanna do. (Sorry for the shameless Mamas and Papas plug.)

"The idea" is that there is no silver bullet that will guarantee you anything in the military, other than the chance to serve. Military assignments, as I said before, are a unique blend of meritocracy (did you earn it?), timing (do they need you in a certain place at a certain time), who you know/who knows you (just like everything else), and - sometimes - just a lot of dumb luck.

The only thing you can fully control is your performance. It must be noted, though, that if you give 100% of yourself, 100% of the time, things have a way of working out for the best (even if it doesn't seem like it at the time).

If for no other reason, you get to avoid the USAF. They are generally an annoying and unpleasant bunch. They're almost worse than the Marines ;)

Ahhhh, KBay .... not so fast. (I will not call you Grasshopper due to your prior service).

You will be guaranteed Navy Wings of Gold if these two gentlemen are your grandfather and father (L to R), respectively ...... :)

What camera/film combo did you use to take that shot?

Are you saying Sen. McCain was guaranteed his wings by virtue of his pedigree?

One of my instructors (a furloughed TWA pilot who was back on active duty) was one of his instructors .... according to him, had you or I flown like that --- we would never have seen graduation day ...... :) We won't even get into the rest of the story ....

I'd like to hear the rest of that if you'd be willing to PM. If not, no big deal. I'm always a fan of stories to that effect.
