I had a 7/8/9 74 on the ASTB and didn't get picked up the two times I applied for OCS. Selection for Intel is truly on the "whole person" concept. Low marks in any one area can be enough to push you out.
My self-assessment was that my motivational statement was lacking on the first two packages and finishing my degree at University of Phoenix didn't help.
However I was selected for a Direct Commission the first time up. I totally revamped my statement and I had started working full time in the Intel field (after 5 years in the Navy Reserves as an Intelligence Specialist)
The points I'm trying to make:
1 - From my experience, no single part of the application makes you a shoe in, but can make you uncompetitive.
2 - Don’t give up. Keep working towards your goal.
