NROTC indocs

On the subject of "orientation week" at UCLA, they should rename it "Happy Fun Week." It's really laid back, no yelling and screaming, no harsh treatment, no early reveille, simply an introduction to the military, basic customs/courtesies, uniform wear/upkeep, inspection knowledge, etc... It really is a nice vacation for a week before school starts...and it's in Southern California, so you can't really beat it. I would bet that there are a lot of people out there who would gladly pay $120 to get that deal, instead of the indocs they get. Enjoy it, and be a proud UCLA Mid once you do get sworn in.

Indeed it has. However, UCLA runs a pretty tight ship overall. The O-week is "oh-so-weak" as far as all that other stuff goes, but the unit is run really well, has a great reputation, and commissions very fine Ensigns and 2ndLt's. It also has an outstanding Drill Team, for those interested in more of a "military" experience.

If it counts for anything, I did attend basic training at Great Lakes, which was slightly challenging.

Thanks Flashypants, I couldn't agree w/ you more about your point as well.

The funny thing is at my unit, the freshmen can't call themselves MIDN til after the first semester, even though technically they are. In the past a number of freshmen would drop out and/or get caught up w/ the college life too much their first semester, so now they keep all the freshman in one company under a whole different, more strict, routine than anyone else, they call it the "plebe" company HAHAHA

And about the Indoc, I think CNET wanted things to be less "chaotic" this yr, considering 2 MIDN candidates died last year at an Indoc. Drink your water wannabe middies.

Hot damn, we got some tough upper class mids here! And I thought I could be uptight at times! However, it is a good point about not calling yourself a midshipman until you actually start at the unit. We're not trying to get up in your face Fcrabot, just want you to know where we are coming from.

yeah, while i was a midn at odu, it was freakin' awesome. i guess i'm just one of those kids that enjoy getting screamed at. it was my favorite week out of my life- i lost my love handles, barely ate, and scared my straight to do what i was supposed to do as a future midn. don't worry, you'll enjoy it .

I heard in from a guy I know in A-Pool that they weigh how hard your NROTC freshman indoc was and then it counts for 10% of your NSS.

Enishi, I'm not by any means close to being a midn (I'm still in the process of applying) but I'm the same way! I do PT 3 times a week with the Marines, and they have 2 former DIs that run PT. I seriously look forward to being screamed at every week. Call me weird, but I think it's kind of funny. As I've said before, there's little that's more motivating than a former DI literally SNARLING at you to "Get your fvcking legs up!" (we were doing "hello dollies")

If you already know how to march and address those yelling at you w/ confidence, you'll be fine. For me, one day I was being yelled at, the next week we all went out drinking, so in the back of your head you know that they're just doing this cause it's part of the whole show. All they're trying to do is weed out the people who can't take a few screams for a couple days in their life. :icon_smil

No prob. Its kinda like saying you are a 2lt or Ens a few weeks before commissioning. You know you will be one, but you arent official yet. Besides, get used to calling yourself "Midshipman Candidate So and So" for about a week. Good Luck
