NROTC Midshipman - Getting cleared by BUMED after surgery??

Pale Rider

New Member
Hello - my son is an NROTC - Marine Option (on full scholarship) in his sophmore year and just had to have shoulder surgery for a torn labrum. As a Marine and former OSO I know how difficult getting past BUMED can be post-surgery, but things have likely changed some since my OSO days... Anyone have any current gouge or best practices such as the "Golden Shoulder" eval?

I am tracking on recording and compiling all med records pre and post surgery, PT, etc...

Anyone been through this specific process recently?

Have your son get an AirWarriors account or better yet, he can check out the NAMI/BUMED guide. Has he reached out to this NROTC Unit Staff as well?

Thanks - yes he has an Air Warriors account. And yes we can read the BUMED guide. And yes his NROTC staff knows - he is currenty in the unit and just had to have surgery.

I'd like to hear from someone with recent experience in the process.

From the NETC website:
If you have been found physically qualified or granted a medical waiver, but you experience a change in your medical status (such as a new illness, injury, medication, or surgery), between the time of your DoDMERB physical examination and the time of reporting to your ROTC unit, you must alert DoDMERB of this change at 1-800-841-2706 or via email at usaf.usafa.dodmerb.mbx.helpdesk@mail.mil.
The NROTC unit should be in contact with DoDMERB, and I'm certain he will need to provide supporting documentation (surgery & follow-up) to DoDMERB (not the unit)....the NROTC should be doing all of the coordination for your son. Have your son talk to the Federal Secretary at the unit, as they do all the paperwork with DoDMERB physicals. "What's the timeline look like?" "What's next?" "What are the chances of getting a waiver?" (BTW, the standard wait is about 6 months after surgery).

From what you've stated, it seems like your son has done everything he was supposed to do. I know he's worried about his future, but at this time, he (& you) needs to take one step at a time.

As to your concerns from being a former OSO, your son is already in the system, and had a previous QUALIFIED medical review from DoDMERB (required for the scholarship activation). Now he needs to prove medically that he's good to go....follow up medical review.

Also, your son will be required to do a pre-commissioning physical prior to graduating.

Adding to the above your son has all the right resources and nothing else you can do other than be supportive.
