NROTC question

Yes. I am a Pirate.
I have a question about NROTC. My college doesn't have a NROTC program, the nearest is three hours driving time away. I am classified as a junior, but I have two years of school left. Could I transfer to a school that has a NROTC program and meet the requirements to get a commission with two years of school left?

Yes you can. Find a school that offers NROTC and apply for the 2-year scholarship program. Keep in mind you will still have to take physics and calc.

I have to physics and calc anyways (physics major). How competitive is the the 2 year scholarship?

Thanks for your help.

There is a little bit more to it than just transferring. In order to get the two year scholarship, you have to spend part of the summer (before you would start the program) catching up at the Naval Science Institute (I think that is what it is called) up in Rhode Island. They will teach you some of the Naval Science classes and how to march/salute/etc.

*edit: it doesn't matter how what actual year you are in the university - only what year you are in the NROTC program. I joined NROTC as a junior in the university (to take five years to graduate) but as a sophomore in the NROTC program.

I understand and I am willing to do what ever it takes. Right now my college GPA is not too hot. It is a 2.1 right know, because of motivational problems that I had when I started college not mention I had to retake a couple of math classes to advance in my program and SFA averages your the grades of you retakes. So my GPA went into the tank. However, I have consistantly raised my GPA over the past 3 semesters, worked full time, and I have at least 150 volunteer hours. I have never felt so driven and focused in my life to achieving a goal. But, I am guessing that this is not competitive.

I applied and received the 2-year scholarship. I went to Rhode Island this past summer. I had a 3.7 GPA going into it. Some of the guys up there did not get the scholarship and they had 2.0-2.5 GPAs. If you do not get the scholarship, you will just have to pay for school yourself. Your selection for it depends on your GPA, letters of recom., a couple of interviews that you will have with the officers at the NROTC unit, and on the amount of people that apply for it. good luck

Thanks of the info! I must have been misinformed on how the NROTC program works, I thought you had to have a scholarship or be in the college program to get a commision through NROTC.

So if I transfered to the Univeristy of Houston (cross-town affiliated with Rice's NROTC unit) joined the NROTC program and did not get a scholarship, I could be commissioned?

I'm not entirely sure about that. I can't say that I've every met any 2-year college programmers, but anything is possible. My best advice is to get in touch with the unit/affiliate you wish to join.

http://www.ruf.rice.edu/~navy/

I'd email one of the instructors and get the info straight from the horse's mouth. Hope that helps.

Thought about OCS? If you decide that you don't want to do NROTC, you can talk to a recruiter and see what you have to do to get the ball moving right now.

I have already contacted a recruiter and I have taken the ASTB. Right now my chances for OCS are slim to none, so I want to exhaust all my options while I still can before I put all my eggs into one basket so to speak. That is why I asked my question. I sent an email to the Houston NROTC Consortium that runs the PVAMU and the Rice NROTC Units. That was Friday, still no response. Thanks for your help, early this morning.

Chances for getting aviation out of OCS are also not too great - actually right now they are pretty much zero. ROTC would be a better route.

That is what I am thinking, too. My AQR/PFAR/FOFAR scores are great, but my OAR needs to be higher. (7/9/7 51) So we will see, still no response from Houston.

Well, I have the answer to my question. I got reponse from a very helpful LT from NROTC Houston. He said that if I transfered to U of Houston (main campus) I would have to transfer in as a first semester Sophmore to enter the college program and maintain a 2.5 GPA. Which fine, as long as I get a commission. If I transfered I would loose about two semesters of credit, but I will loose one as it is by transfering. That is a loss that I am willing to take, so long as I get that coveted commission. So that being said, my app to U of H is sitting in their server right know. I have to sent my transcript in after this semester's grades return. So right know everything is riding on being accepted by U of H.

At least look into OCS. Times change and cycles change. Keep all your options open. I went through ROTC. But at my time they had a program where you could go into OCS if you weren't contracted and get a better deal out of it. Don't feel guilty about playing one option against the other. In the end, whatever gets you in gets you in. Explore everything and remember recruiters get points for getting you in. If you can, talk to a ROTC guy to assess your potential. They don't get anything out of telling you yes or no, so they might give you a more honest answer. And don't stick to one specific ROTC unit. The navy pays tuition whether it's in-state or out-of-state. So explore your options. All of them. Get in how you can.
