I have a question. I dont know how the scoring, NSS, works. I see the numbers all the time, of what it would take for a certain airframe, etc... They make no sense to me. How does the scoring work? Could someone compare it to another grading scale (like a regular 0-100 scale, or a SAT scale). What is a good grade? What does it take to get that grade?
 
Scores range from 20 to 80. They adjust it based on the something like the 50 or 200 or whatever previous scores. It's adjusted to a bell curve if I recall. 50 is the median/mode/mean/whatever (been a while since I took stats). 50 also happens to be the Jet cutoff for Navy, 52 for Marines. As far as how they're calculated.... that's like trying to find the Holy Grail.
 
So what you are saying is that 50 is the minimum score for jets (for Navy)? Now even if you get a 61, that doesn't necessarily mean you will get jets, it just depends on what that weeks selection availabilty is? But if you get 49, then you are SOL for jets any way the selection could carry itself out. Are all those correct?

That about sums it up, except Navy guys/gals right now need a high 60 to low 70 NSS to get that one slot a week.
 
Actually, there were 5 slots last week or so I heard . . . all 3 of the VT-3 selects ended up w/ jets. You never know. And as for NSS calculation, maybe if you actually got to look at the formula and were below a certain critical IQ, your head would explode. Hence the "secrecy." Okay, bad joke.
 
Yeah, our CO told us that the slots are opening up again... slowly.

must be, when i selected the word on the street was that there were no jet slots for the rest of the fiscal year...ah rumors
 
its not a test its a score you get after you complete all the stages of primary
 
Hey man .. NSS is a numeric way of comparing students against other students. If you score about the same as other motivated students (in the past) you get a 50 . . All you can ever do in flight school is give it your all and let the rest take care of itself. Don't ever miss an opportunity to impress somebody in flight school. I missed several but got lucky. Timing is critical. Good luck.
 
Your NSS will depend on your VT Squadron and your flying. When you are done with primary you will find our your NSS and it will be changed depending on Squadron. Some squadrons get pts taken away, some stay the same. So don't bother trying to figure it out. Just ask one of the civ clerks what it is when you are getting close to finishing primary to get a feeling of where you stand.

As for jets, I believe the NAVY is SOL. Those of us that were winged lately were told the Navy is over there jet slots by 200, and over their helo slots by 40 for FY 04. They were asking for navy wingers to switch to Marine platforms!

Marine Jets are still looking good if you want it. Like was previously said, if you have a 50, or 52 now, jets are pretty automatic. Lots of friends got them and didn't want them. So many who are "in the know" are making sure they don't get over a 50, then they end up at south park hoping to be one of the chosen ones who are selected to fly "God's chariot"!

200? That's a new one I haven't heard before.

All 3 squadrons had 1 jet slot last week at Whiting. Take it for what it's worth.
