There's a lot of parts that make up the whole, but at the end of the line, it's all about $$$$$ ... it's ALWAYS about $$$$$.

Until the airlines are willing to pay a decent wage for their smaller operations (size aircraft) and/or entry-level pilots and until the traveling public is willing to pay more for a ticket to fund those pay raises and until the FAA comes down 'harder' on training AND performance than the age-old mantra of '70% and fly' being good enough .... these things will continue to happen.

You get what you pay for ... and you bet your life, accordingly.

Believe it.

I was talking to a Delta captain today. He told me regionals are starting pilots at $15K a year. Before the big hiring boom went bust, regionals were hiring people with instrument/commercial only ratings and 200 hours of flight time. This was bound to happen and will again if the airlines don't change their ways.

15K?!!!!!

I make more than and I'm just a station agent for American Eagle.

Although admittedly I must admit that my airline is very different from some of the other regionals in that we do have quite a few experienced pilots in the left seat. But that could change in the future as some of the pilots who moved from AA moved over to start up AE. There are some FOs that look like they're about 18-19 years old. Sometimes I wonder.

Does he ever say "oohhhh, hey there muscley-arms" ?
One time after the captain closed the cargo door, which the FO was unable to do after several attempts, said FO commented on how strong he was in his quaint lispy voice. The captains impression of this had us all laughing up beer all over the place.
