Oath of Enlistment

Hi all,

So i'm currently playing the waiting game with my application for SNA on it's way to the board sometime between now and next month/year/decade. My recruiter's exact words were "go live your life and i'll get back to you." So in the spirit of that, I've been playing with the idea of quitting my job and doing a little bit of backpacking with some cash i've saved up before I go to OCS, basically telling the recruiter here's my e-mail, i'll be in Europe/SE Asia/Australia. My question is, if I do this would it be possible for him to get me a plane ride from whichever country to OCS if I do get selected, and would I be able to do the oath of enlistment at say an American Embassy? DAE have similar experience?

That sounds amazing - I'd never be able to logistically swing it - but it sounds great. I've been wanting to backpack the AT for a few weeks and might try to hit it up this summer if possible. I have no knowledge for you in regards to you actual question, just wanted to applaud your awesomeness of an idea.

Sounds like fun and certainly plausible, except for the Navy "to get me a plane ride from whichever country to OCS" part. As far as I'm aware, the transportation they'll reimburse you for is from your home of record, not wherever you happen to be when you get a report date. It's not like you'll get a phone call saying "be in Newport on Friday, here's your plane ticket". You'll have plenty of notice if selected.

I also wouldn't cut your pre-Navy walkabout too close to that report date. Go do it, by all means - it will probably be your last chance to do something like that - but plan to be home with a few weeks to get over any illnesses or allow for travel delays, etc.

Keep a journal of the countries you visit with dates. You'll be glad you did when you begin filling out your SF-86.

I'm gonna jump on this thread to ask a relevant question... so it's fine if we travel abroad prior to OCS? I wasn't sure if it'd affect the security clearance or NASIS or anything like that. If I'm accepted this next board, I imagine I won't get a date until later in the year, and I'm in the early stages of planning a trip to China and Russia if that is the case.

Travel overseas to not-friendly countries immediately before joining the military? It'll raise eyebrows when you go for your security clearance.

That's what I thought, although I'd have what I believe to be reasonable explanations for both. My boyfriend is studying in Beijing for most of the year and I'd be going there for around a week to visit him. I study Russian and spent a semester there, and would be returning for about a week with some of my (American) friends that I met when I was studying. I'll talk to my recruiter about it once I know whether or not I've been accepted.

Just don't forget to mention that summer you spent teaching North Koreans basketball in Syria...

Eh, travel to anywhere but Iran, Cuba, North Korea and Syria are probably not that big a deal if you have good explanations and don't try to hide things about it.

As for being sworn in at an Embassy it might be possible if you knew somebody there but probably not practical otherwise. Don't make things difficult, just get sworn in as normal and make sure you leave enough time between travel and your OCS report date. And no, they aren't going to pay for you to fly from vacation straight to OCS.

I know this is an old thread, but I wanted to bounce back here about travel. What is everyone's opinion on travelling to Cuba prior to OCS? Is it alright to do so now considering we're normalizing relations with Cuba?
