got it, must have passed over it. Seemed like from the feel I got on other posts it was more for the people they wanted to fail...so I'll prep

The way I view these type of training environments (been through two different ones, neither OCS though), is that you need to know everything, BUT at some point you'll figure out what you really need to know because you will be told or you'll realize that no one has been asked X, Y, or Z since you've been there... but even then, it's still fair game. And as it's been said, some people do make it through OCS without ever looking at the gouge ahead of time. When you have nothing else competing for your time, memorizing the gouge happens more quickly than when you have TV and internet to distract you from memorizing.

At NAPS INDOC, I'd be studying something for what seemed like all day and never quite get it down, then it'd be stuck in my head while I tried to fall asleep, then by the morning I could recite it verbatim. Not sure if that happened to anyone else, but it has happened to me.

Are we expected to be able to describe the rank insignias? Also, do we need to know the 14 leadership traits by definition and in order from 1-14?
Yes, Yes, Yes
All verbatim

During 6th Week PI, a certain Chief walked down our entire line asking what the 9th leadership trait is. Took 6 People to finally get it right. I guess we just couldn't count JJDIDTIEBUCKLE under pressure.

If it's anything like Recruit Training, not only do you have to describe the insignia, but it has to be described word for word the way it is described in the Required Knowledge instruction. E.g. for SCPO: "Gold fouled anchor with silver USN centered across the anchor below one silver star."

I've added another category to the quiz applet for the rank insignia and their descriptions. Hooray for XML!

For those interested in a lower-tech study tool, here's all the inspection knowledge in slide form. You can print multiple slides per page and then cut the pages to make nice flash cards. In Adobe Reader:
  • Choose "Print..." from the File menu
  • Under "Page Sizing & Handling," click the Size button and choose the Landscape orientation
  • Now click the Multiple button
  • Choose "Custom..." in the "Pages per sheet" combobox, and select how many rows/columns you want. I find that 3x3 makes good-sized flash cards
I find these flash cards to be good for learning the material, and then the quiz app good for testing myself.

JJDIDTIEBUCKLE
I thought it was fifteen leadership traits, JJ DID TIE BUCKLE H, the last one being honor. In fact, if you google "navy leadership traits," the first link is an OCS document that says Fifteen Leadership Traits. Did they change that since I've been through?

The inspection knowledge packet has 15 leadership traits and JJ DID TIE BUCKLE H is still the mnemonic device, so it hasn't changed yet.
