It's self-critiquing when you take a kid out on a FAM (Contact) and have to utilize a radar departure, with a GCA to recover. What on Earth is the kid getting out of that sortie doing turn patterns using only sucker holes for "ground reference" up in the Delta or Juliette areas?!?:icon_rage
My own wing would do it with me quite often, and then incomplete me at the end of my flight. He'd get us VFR on top, and then work on high work. Free flight in my book.

I always shake my head at "those guys." We're not all that way.

Here here. Those "guys" are usually the IP of the century, but are also sometimes the laughingstock of the ready room due to their questionable emphasis on "getting the X" at any cost.
I can't say I haven't ever been the guy that launches in the weather when you really shouldn't, but you live, you learn. I would much rather wait now and get the quality X.

I'm going to be one of those SM DH guys in April. Looking forward to getting back to flying a lot.
Thanks for the insight on the VT's. For what it's worth, the kool aid factory in Millington is putting this out as a legit program to "shore up" the VT's and put guys on a seperate (but viable, allegedly) career path once you screen for DH.
Cheers.

Under the old school; FAM, PA, FORM, RI/BI system that free flight worked. Now with the new system with meeting MIF, blah, blah, blah, et al. You're seriously hurting the kid when you MIF him for course rules early to just get an "on top" flight out and the X. He goes up for his checkride and has only seen no kidding course rules maybe four times ...that's not good.

I've seen more than a couple of SNAs fly with me on their safe for solo with marginal course rules experience, but yet were MIF'd... You go through TIMS and then find out they only did it maybe half the time because their on-wings and off-wing IPs were those sorta guys with that attitude.

Hozer, is this the mythical "Instructor" career track that Bupers has talked about for the last several years? You know, IP tour, sea tour, IP tour with plans to eventually fleet up to a VT CO? I have heard about the SM DH slots, but no info about career track afterwords.

That it is, and believe me there are plenty of skeptics but shit, if this is my grueling DH tour, then rock and roll.
"They" haven't said if we have to do the standard Joint stuff post-DH. But this is straight from the Flags, not an NPC initiative (they didn't even know about it is the story).
Look for "quality spread", i.e. DH's that could go Operational, but will get selected for VT's, too.
But you're right on the money, you get "read-in" to VT's as a DH and supposedly you're there to stay with a similar promotion/command opportunities as Operational guys.

as a side note: The current XO of VT-4 was VADM Zortman's aide when the ball started rolling on this. So, it'll be interesting for sure...

Very interesting... I hope they can pull it off. I know plenty of people who would be interested in that track & I think it would be good for the Navy. I wonder if the DH level is the only "on ramp" or can you get on that track somewhere else in your career. I've never been in the VT's except as a student so I have no knowledges on it.

That seems to be a step in right direction. I was amazed what the fleet and others thought of VT officers. Great to hear that is all changing because IMO I believe VT IP's work some real magic and at times worked harder in VT land then I did in single seat hornet fleet squadron.

Latest I was told from NPC was SM DH was not just a track to SM CO. Was supposed to 1. bring legit DH's to VT. Had at one time 0-3's filling in as DH's. 2. Famous words of quality spread. I am still skeptic about it all especially with FTS/SAU units and the DH tickets they need punched....sounds promising but guess only time will tell.

Yup. I'll post a private update for folks when I check-in the squadron and get some insight. Glad I'm a guinea pig with 20 yrs in...
