Online Grad Degrees - Major Schools

Ok so here is my question... I know that most online schools get a bad rap but I have been doing some research with some of the bigger schools (ie. Univ of Alabama, Georgia, NC State, UF and some others) and some of these schools have pretty big distance degree programs. I was curious if obtaining a degree from these schools, since they are more well known, would look a little better than some of the other "online u" schools (ie univ. of phoenix)?? I mean its going to look pretty obvious that you were not a campus student when your résumé or your duty stations where you were stationed are absolutely no where near some of these schools. Just curious of what you guys thought.

Thanks

I think reputation of these schools matters more in the civilian world than in the Navy. The first thing you want to check is if the online degree is accredited. Also, since it's online, there are going to be less options.

However, there are some pretty good distance programs out there, for instance, Indiana's business school is ranked 23rd by US News, but offers an online MBA, which awards the same degree as the resident students.

Apparently UF has a program where it's done online, but they meet once a semester at G'ville, so they can get away w/ not calling itself an online degree. Pretty sweet deal.

I got mine (Masters of Science in Business Administration and Management) from Boston University. They have offices through the Metropolitan College (distance learning) at Cherry Point, Lejeune, HQMC, and Ft. Bragg. They actually fly profs in from Boston twice a month and do the classes there. There's an online version coming, but no specific word when. It works better if you need direct help with the subject matter, like me.

....and it's pricey, whether you're a FL resident or not. But, you gotta do what you gotta do.

Anyone have any experience with Norwich?

I'm an undergrad from there, but no personal experience with the online masters myself. One of the IPs in VT-28 while I was there was doing an online degree from Norwich, and one of the IPs in my squadron now just finished one. He had nothing but good things to say about it. At the completion of your studies you go up to Norwich for a week of on campus stuff. I'm planning on doing one during my shore tour.

On Norwich... (My wife is looking hard at their online military history masters)

Apparentley, Norwich has been pouring alot of money into their online programs over the past couple of years and also won a few awards for their different programs.

I'd advise calling them and seeing what they can offer you. My wife did, and the lady called back at a time that was convenient for my wife (8 pm their time) and they spoke for a while about the masters prgrams.

They seem pretty helpful over the phone. That, and Norwich is a pretty respectable school.

I'll see if my wife has any more info and PM you if she does.

This is true, but prepare to pay out of state tuition for it, which for IU is quite a chunk of change.

I've been doing Embry-Riddle's online program and my wife has been doing Penn State's. Both good programs!

I did alot of research about online programs before I started mine with ERAU. Online degree programs are no longer looked at with disdain, because there are so many more accredited big name schools that are doing it.
