Stashed ENS just got his API orders to "REPORT NOT LATER THAN 03-JULY-2008." Any last words of advice? I'm pretty #%$! stoked for flight school, and I'm prepared for the most part. For this thread, It'd be interesting to hear about API road trip experiences (especially from guys out west like myself). I'll be passing through San Antonio, Austin, Houston, and New Orleans. Know of any must sees or must eats? Furthermore, who all is classin' up for API in July? cuz I'm gonna need some friends for Uncle Sam's b-day.

Yeah, well. The Dude abides.
Mulate's in New Orleans is a must eat. I was there for the Football Nat'l Championship Game and ate there numerous times. It is right across the street from the convention center.

Rudy's BBQ... good stuff.

If you have time check out the Alamo, and the Riverwalk is only a block away.

Damn H20man, you beat me to it. I was just looking up the location. It's at exit 550 on I10. I haven't been there for 16 years but sent friends from Yuma there last winter and they came back raving about it, so I guess it's still as good as ever. :D

voodoo BBQ in New Orleans. I went to school in New Orleans and that was by far my favorite bbq place, It's on St. Charles Avenue, pretty close to Lee's Circle.

I made this same route a few months ago. Coming from Utah, the scenery will become increasingly bland as you make it towards FL.

You should time an evening visit to Pagosa Springs in southern CO.

I think they are open until 2 am for people not staying at the resort, but if you bring a white, full length bathrobe you can stay all night. (that's how they distinguish b/w resort guests and visitors.)

Also, I'd avoid interstates until about TX, if you can.

Yep, that is the original... which I live about 5 minutes from. They actually have a large number of locations now. The BBQ seasoning they have is awesome too.

dude the place to eat at in New Orleans is K-Pauls, owned by famous Chef Paul Prudhomme. Kind of on the expensive side, but man well worth it. They're only open for dinner as far as I know.

early on in the pipeline, we had an instructor break down flight school for us. his advice: "memorize everything, and don't fvck up" ... not the most eloquent words of wisdom, but they've served me well so far.

as far as the road trip goes, about an hour west of the redneck riviera, in foley, AL, is lambert's cafe, home of the "throwed rolls." definitely worth a stop if you're hungry, or just want to try your hand at snagging the rolls they chuck at you from across the restaurant. also, in austin, las manitas avenue cafe has great morning-after mexican food to help cure that inevitable hangover.

good luck and enjoy the ride.

It's in the touristy French Quarter but Cafe du Monde has excellent coffee and the beignets(French doughnut) are pretty damn good.

If you come down I-20 and go through Ft. Worth you need to stop and check out the downtown area. You MUST go to Joe T. Garcia's which is some of the best Mexican food in Texas. Other than that there is nothing besides the night life there... You would then go south on I-35 (toward I-10 which takes you to p'cola) through Austin and then San Antonio. Austin is three hours away from Ft Worth.

If you are driving through Austin I would do it as a night stop. Downtown is a great area with lots of good eats and bars in walking distance. The University of Texas campus is just north of downtown... If you really are looking for a unique place go to Salt Lick BBQ just outside Austin. I have eaten lots of BBQ in my days and that place is hands down one of the best, Rudy's doesn't even come close. ( Austin is the best city in Texas imo)

When going through San Antonio (a little over an hour away from Austin) definently stop and check out the riverwalk and Alamo (its free) like H20 said. There is lots to do if you want to make the time, or its just good to stop and stretch the legs before getting back on the road. Nice area...

Houston is a tad over three hours away from San Antonio on I-10. Honestly if I were you I would just blow straight through it. I hate Houston and think its the worst metroplex in Texas (spent a lot of time in Houston). Its going to be about an eight hour drive from Austin to New Orleans but those two cities are da bomb.

Have fun!

my mouth is drolling now, I always HAVE to get those whenever I'm down there(grandparents live two hours away from New Orleans), that and the boiled crawfish :D.

Yeah, well. The Dude abides.
I ate at the cafe du monde, and I thought it was a bit overrated. Their dounuts are one of a kind but I didn't think they were anything special. Just my opinion though...
