P-Cola housing and such

Search function isn't working for me right now. Anyway I'm going to be graduating OCS in March and reporting to P-cola for NFO trainign shortly thereafter. I have a couple of questions I hope someone can answer or direct me to the answer.

First, now that OCS is in Newport how should I go about getting housing? Should I live on base and look for an apartment when I get there (can I even do that?) or should I try and setup something while still up here?

Second, in terms of housing what places should one avoid? I'm sure it's been asked before but things change so one place that was great to live might now be crap and vice versa. Any specific locations I should check out or avoid?

Lastly and off subject, How long is the class up wait time for IFS? I was told varying lengths ranging from 2-3 weeks, to months.

Thanks for any help!

there are tons of houses to rent or buy around the back gate. i'd avoid the apartments out of the back gate though, especially if you're going to live with roommates. their leases don't terminate when one roommate has to leave, and thus the other roommate gets stuck with the entire rent. besides, houses are a lot better to live in, period (in my opinion). i'd rent (or buy, since you're an nfo). i bought a house in 2006, was there for a year as a SNFO, and now i rent it out.

rumor has it

I'm an NFO living on base at NASP. They have recently privatized housing on base and even said that they plan on letting guys/gals team up as roomates and rent out housing. So it might not hurt to check that out too.

As far as living off base...from what I hear its best if you're willing to drive 30-45 minutes to/from base.

I'd shy away from living on base in P-Cola... mainly b/c if you get a roommate, you can get place for considerably less than BAH... which means more money in your pocket.

If you move on base, you don't get BAH at all. Or rather, with privatized housing, it all gets taken out as an allotment.

Having been here since AUG now I would have gotten a place downtown. I might be biased since I lived in downtown philly, but I like the downtown atmosphere better. Your not far from base, from the back gate, from the beach, and even northern pcola. It might be more expensive, but you will save money on cab fare for your rides back from sevile. If you want to live downtown and cheap, there is also the mission too.
