Path to Whidby SAR

Climbing Mt Baker it was comforting that Whidbey SAR was a phone call away. And what an amazing duty station! Cool job and a great location as others have confirmed. Perfectly reasonable aspiration.
Those guys are great, they save a lot of lives each year and fly over my house often.

I hear these guys might be looking for a little help. Probably easier that getting the Whidbey SAR billet . . . .

It may be as hard, if not harder, to get. It's very competitive and can take several years to get an interview.

Whidby SAR also has a post-DH OIC billet. I didn't think that was the OP-T billet, but could be wrong.

This is what's changed recently, at least for some station SAR groups. The OIC gig has been upgraded to an ACSB-screened billet. I think it was driven by a combo of reduced CO opportunity for HSC + a few "incidents" among SAR units.

A current HSC fleet bubba, vice this NAVAIR nerd, could speak truth.

Yes, as far as I am aware all SAR units are now an OP-T (or Special Missions? I'd have to check the slate) command.

In addition to what you said, it's not just to give increased command opportunities, it was as a result of CNAF taking the SAR units over (previously they were owned by CNIC apparently) and wanting traditional oversight over them after you the incidents you mentioned in your post. I couldn't tell you the difference, but apparently there was a lot less standardization, support, understanding, etc. of the SAR units when under CNIC and they were apparently happy to get rid of them and give them to CNAF. Such is the story I've heard.

Interesting.

I know someone there now (HSM) and I think I may have misunderstood what billet he's in which probably also confused things (for me).

The new CO spots may be open to both HSC & HSM. Change happened since I quit the fleet.

Don't know how Navy or Marines approach staffing of SAR units currently, but in the past Marine SAR units had a Det OIC, and all officers/pilots also held staff positions with the Base Command (DOSS, G-1, G-3, G-4). At least that is how we were staffed with the MCAS Iwakuni SAR Det.

Any Marines able to comment on current SAR Det organization?

I believe with the retirement of the HH-46E, MCAS SAR is no longer a thing - with responsibility shifted to USCG.
