I believe the NFO bonus is $9,000 a year. There aren't too many airlines that need weapons operators, hence less demand. Yes, that's on top of your pay. Reminds me of a Pullerism, though,"It's not the flight pay I have a problem with. It's the base pay." Chesty was attrited from flight school, BTW. Not "aeronautically adaptable."

Much thanks.

Marine Aviator=Naval Aviator

Pay Bonus' are the same, air force doesn't get paid 20k more a year.

Best bet for fixed wing is air force, but there's still almost a 50% chance with the marines, which is good enough for me.

Quality of life might be better in the other branches, but if I wanted to sit in a comfortable chair I'd stay in college for another 4 years :)

My next question was if one had opportunities to try to get involved in a space program through marine aviation like air force and navy, but if the first person to orbit the earth was a marine, I suppose that answers it.

Much thanks to all, hope to see ya on the field in a few years.

"Let me explain. No, there is too much, let me sum up."

The requirements for space 'duty' are on NASA's webpage. You can find the link via google or AW search.

Check out the bio for General Bolden. Our TBS class got the opportunity to meet him / hear him talk. Truly a Marine/Space/Naval Aviation hero.

Question: Nothing personal, but something that some of us would like to know. If I go the PLC route to commissioning (rather PLC Jrs-Srs or PLC-Combo) when does my date of entry (or whatever it's called) pay start? That leads to my next question. How much will I be making after graduating college and getting commissioned as an O-1? Does anyone know where I can find a chart of Officer pay? Thanks for the help.

Check with your OSO for sure. . or perhaps someone can clarify. .but mine started after first OCS was finished if I'm not mistaken. So I got commissioned as an O-1 with three years in.

Pay charts can be found on lots of websites. . one that comes to mind is www.usmc.mil ..click on site map ..and in the career section. .about half way down .click on pay charts. .

look on www.dfas.mil for military pay charts. Just follow the links to military pay. Your Pay entry base date is the first day that you report to OCS. Example: if you go to PLC juniors on May 28 2003, then seniors the next summer, and you get commissioned in the spring of 2005, your pay date starts from May 2003. That means in May 2005 you will be paid as an O-1 with 2 years (refer to the pay chart). Hope that's helpful.

As of my knowledge, you get paid as an E-5 while at OCS. If I'm at OCS for the 10 week PLC-combned, then would I get paid $1561.50 (E-5 pay < 2 years) for 10 weeks (2.5 months)? This is prolly all wrong, but I'm just a dumb civilian, so I stand to be corrected. Thanks.

Actually, I believe PEBD (pay entry base date) is the day you sign the contract to go to OCS. Mine is Feb '88 yet I didn't go to OCS until June '88. The PLC program is great because the time also counts towards retirement points if you retire as a reservist. 2 six week courses actually count as 2 satisfactory years, 1 ten week course counts as 1 good year. Hope this helps.

Sounds about right. .but it isn't 2.5 months (10/13 * 3 = 2.308). . let's see. .you'll also earn some leave which you will sell back at then end -- 2.5 days per month) which is practically a week's extra pay.

Does that come as one large check or is it spread out? How exactly does that time factor in for your "time in grade" and so forth for retirement and for the initial rank advancement? Thanks everyone for your help.

You get paid every two weeks. If you sign up and are Inactive reserve until you leave for ocs, then this time counts toward time in grade for pay purposes only. It does not count as time toward retirement. So you could be getting paid as an 05 with 21 or 22 years but just be reaching 20 years active duty time.

USAF bonus is $25K regardless of platform, and only requires a 5 yr obligation. Again, you have to wait until your first hitch is up before signing.

Pay entry base date (PEBD) will typically be commissioning date if you're NROTC or Academy.

Unless I'm mistaken, your PEBD starts the day you sign your paperwork to become an Officer candidate. If you signed your paperwork on January 29 but did not go to OCS until June, your PEBD is Jan 29.

LtCol Watters, USMC was manning CapCom the day Columbia disentegrated. CapCom is only manned by astronauts. There are a few Marines at Johnson Space Center. BTW, all the USMC astronauts are not jet pilots. Col Noriega is a SH*TTER (53) pilot.

I wish my PEBD was then. I'd be a few hundred a month richer now. It varies with commissioning program, so talk to your OSO.

I could have sworn he was a 46 bubba, or so Naval Aviation News said.
