Ok here's the situation, I'm sitting here with my fellow stash SNAs waiting to head down to flight school. We're being told there's a 600lb limit on household goods that the Navy will move because we are in P'Cola on "TAD" for less than 20 weeks.

As I understand it the delay + IFS + API means we will likely be there for far more than 20 weeks. Are we going to get per diem during that time? What is our permanent duty station? What's with the 600lb limit?

Did anyone get the Navy to change their mind and move up to 10k? I actually own some furniture that I don't want to part with.

You'll be there for more than 20 weeks yes, but the actual training you're doing, API, is only 6 weeks. So no, you won't get per diem. And the 600 lb limit changes depending on who you talk to. And I guarantee there have been MANY MANY threads on this subject, with many different answers. So happy searching.

I know of people who went to flight management and got the orders changed so they could get their stuff delivered out of storage to them... It all depends on who you talk to- Some of my friends got the AF TMO to move everything for them, the Navy people setting up my move only gave me the 600lbs.

Interesting. Did they pay to keep it in storage? And does it have to be stored at your home of record or can I stash it someplace free (IE my parents' garage)... everyone keeps telling me different information when I ask about it here.

Sorry for rehashing a topic that comes up alot - I was just hoping someone who just reported could throw me the latest and greatest.

I was under impression the military kept it in long term storage... but, Im not sure. I'm pretty sure you can also use your Home of Record move to move the stuff down to P'cola for you.

You can use the 'home of record' to move your stuff. I didnt know this until after I moved. (I wasnt planning on using it yet).

I should have been more clear about this... my home of record was switched to State College, PA (my apartment actually) as part of a series of moves to establish residency here rather than in the People's Republic of Maryland. Can I move things from MD even though its not my duty station and not my home of record? (I'm guessing NO.)

HAHA...PROM. I'm from there.

Anywho..I'm guessing NO as well, but the key is to talk to a PN1 or higher at PSD...they'll help you if they are worth their salt.

Also be careful about that home of record thing...I think there's a limit (1?) to the number of times you can change it and a limit (1?) as to the number of times you can move things to/fro at the government's expense.

P State,

When they pick your stuff up for your API move it goes into one of two TYPES of storage; Temporary (Temp) or Non-temporary storage (non-temp).

The temporary for us Navy studs is the 600lbs you rate when you come down here. This goes into a crate and is shipped down immediately, and is conveniently waiting for you upon your arrival (at least mine was). This can be delivered to your new place as soon as you stop by the moving folks on base and give them your moving paper copies (which you'll get and need to keep in a safe spot; kept mine with my orders and such for easy access). The moving folks on base call the moving folks with your stuff and it is delivered that day if desired. The guys will unpack it all and even take away all the packaging (but be sure to tip if you ask for this service).

Now your non-temp stuff stays with whatever company is moving you from your current location (ie it doesn't get any closer to FL than Pennsylvania in your case). It too is packaged up into a crate (several most likely) and placed in a wharehouse in your current state of residence. When you go to move to Vance or Corpus or wherever THAT'S when you get the rest of it (once you have the orders stating you are going to X, y, or z location).

I realize some folks may have gotten ALL their stuff, but that is, in my opinion, the exception around here.

If I could pass along one word of advice...okay, two: 1) Think long and hard about what you want with you in your 600 lbs 2) It's A LOT less than what you think 600 lbs would be (and I don't even have much of anything), so be selective!

Long, I know. But hopefully that helps you guys out.

When you coming down?

Yes, you can. Just not on the initial move (at lease that's what they told me).

When you go to move to Vance/Corpus/Whiting THEN you can have the stuff picked up from MD, no problem. You warrant two pick-up locations. Heck, if you check with PSD, you may be able to convince them you REALLY need some of your stuff from Maryland. Results may vary.

Hey, I don't know if I can offer any more insight to this thread - just more questions. I am commissioning as an SNA here shortly and doing IFS at my unit before going to P'cola in November.

Penn St, are you doing IFS in Pensacola? That will surely increase your time there and potentially will leave you waiting longer as well.

I have heard various things about this 600 lb rule - my TV weighs 1/3 of that itself. I have also heard that I could rent a U-Haul and move everything myself and somehow get compensated from the Navy from doing so. Is this only for PCS moves?

About the Home of record, I don't even know what mine is. I don't know if it ever got changed from my parents' house to my apartment in Atlanta or what. I guess the YN1 at my unit can help me with that, but it doesn't sound like I need to be thinking about a Home of Record move before API anyways.

I guess I am not alone in feeling super-clueless about the whole Navy moving process, and it feels like SNA's have the most complicated procedure of any newly commissioned officer.

When I checked into API they told us that we are entitled to per diem only if we do not live in BOQ and do not sign a lease out in town. Since this means that none of us could get an apartment out in town, but we could use the per diem to offset the cost of a hotel room during API.

Prior enlisted (like myself) were offered follow-on orders to TW-5 for Primary (if requested from detailer). That comes with funding for full PCS orders so I was able to move all of my gear (a few thousand pounds). That being said, talk to the detailer.

Hey Pennst8, if you're so worried about getting your stuff down there, just wait till the 28th, when I'm back from getting my contact lens waiver, and we can go talk to the XO about switching you to NFO and me to Pilot :). hahaha... Talk to you tomorrow.

If I were you, I would be skeptical of any gouge you get here because what you are entitled to varies DRASTICALLY depending on exactly what you commissioning source is. I was an OCS guy straight from the civilian world, and I did not get anything (not even the 600 lbs).

the key is to talk to a PN1 or higher at PSD...they'll help you if they are worth their salt.

A good PN might help, but the people with the real power are the civilians at the PPO. They deal with this move every day, and they know exactly what the regs are. Call the PPO and set up your move in advance.
