I can't believe we've survived 6 years of this guy and two more to go. I'm looking forward to someone new, personally. Democrat or Republican.

"That guy" is your CinC. Better wrap your brain around that if you want to serve. You should edit your thoughts before posting them.

whoa! how'd you get that...I edited it like 2 seconds after i posted it. didn't want to have an unfair "discussion" since I'm not in the military..anyway, I love the guy, I just think he's probably getting tired of leading, and needs a litte relief, that's all. for his sake.

Come on, sir. Military people complain about things all the time, especially leaders. I don't know how many times I heard something derogatory against Clinton during his tenure. Are we not allowed to complain amongst ourselves?

Derogatory comments aimed towards elected officials are not a good idea. Especially against the CinC and by someone who desires to be an Officer.

However, this is hardly talking politics over a beer with your buddies. This is, and therefore should be treated as, a public forum.

The fact that people did it does not make it right. Furthermore, this forum is not "amongst ourselves." You can count on the fact that every bit of posting and content from AW has been slurped up by Google, Yahoo, and all the other search engines for anyone to read, including the media. Try googling your AW username and you'll see what I mean. Disrespectful, derogatory remarks by military members towards a sitting President or his policies are at best bad form, and at worst a UCMJ violation.

I wondered about the etiquette of posting such things on a public forum such as this. I know in normal conversation, we can talk about politics while scrubbing the deck plates or standing fire watch, and say almost anything within reason. It's on these informal boards, where things tend to stick, where the gray area is.

Of course I know it is improper to officially state that I think my Senator is full of it or the CO has marbles in his head. Informally, though, these comments are allowed among ourselves (that meaning enlisted to enlisted and officer-to-officer. Complaining is always up the chain, but not down it). :)

Thing is, you're not in a limited audience on here. Enlisted have just as much access to officer comments, officers have access to enlisted comments, and civilians have access to military. This isn't the "mess."

In terms of b!tching to others about the military and our current situation, there is a scene in Saving Private Ryan in which all military officers should strive to duplicate if they're ever asked such questions:

"REIBEN: And what about you, Captain?

MILLER: Reiben, what's the matter with you? I don't gripe to you. I'm a captain. There's a chain of command. Griping goes one way, up, only up, never down. You gripe to me, I gripe to my superior officers. Up, get it? I don't gripe to you, I don't gripe in front of you. How long you been in the army?

REIBEN: I'm sorry, sir, I apologize. But if you weren't a captain, or if I were a major, what would you say?
MILLER: In that case, I would say this is an excellent mission, with an extremely valuable objective, worthy of my best efforts. In addition, as I pointed out earlier, I have a fondness for cheese and I hope to have the opportunity to sample some of the Ramelle products, when we arrive there, to see if they live up to their excellent reputation. Moreover, I feel heartfelt sorrow for the mother of Private James Ryan and I'm more than willing to lay down my life, and the lives of my men, especially you, Reiben, to help relieve her suffering."

While the above scene doesn't directly apply to the discussion regarding President Bush, I think in general, it is a great example to follow as a military leader.
