Are you thinking of the VP and presidential nominations for the academies, perhaps? I know they each have a certain number, I think 5. Don't know the details. Not directly relevant to OCS, though.

Presidential nominations to a service academy are actually unlimited. Every son/daughter of a service member gets one automatically.

Really? I didn't know that.. Darn, I could've applied to the Academy with the President's nomination! Actually, the reason I didn't apply was because I just couldn't bare having Clinton involved with any of it! :D

It checks a block. If you have a Sierra Hotel application you are probably fine with "just" a presidential. Otherwise they want to see both President and one from congress. They question your motivation if you just settle for the auto nom.

I see, I see.. "Just" a presidential nomination, huh?! Yes, that's right, George and I will be playing tennis today and I was going to see if I was troubling him by asking for "just" his nomination.. Sounds overly British and aristocratic, but funny.. I heard another perk for servicemembers, particularly submariners' kids, is that their college is usually paid for through foundations, grants, etc. Is that so?

There are foundations that give scholarships yes. The naval academys alumni foundation sends around 75 kids to prep school every year. They also foot a good portion of the NAPS budget. The Specwar community has a scholarship fund for the children of fallen warriors. Your dad has to be dead though. If your parent recieved "The Medal" you are automatically accepted to any service academy. Definitely check it out. There are many other scholarships and grants out there for "brats."
