Just curious-

A friend and I were talking over supper about her father that was a USNA grad and had wanted SEALs but didn't have the eyesight and went SWO... my question is, is PRK authorized now for SEALs (within certain limits) just as it is for pilots (again, within certain guidelines) ?

When I was at the Team, tons of guys had eye surgery. Most of them had it done by the Navy PRK guy. I think one had LASIK but not sure on that one. They are no where near as strict on eyesight in SEAL/diver/EOD as they are in aviation.

Yes, SEALs can obtain a waiver, just like pilots can. Competition for SEAL officer billets is pretty fierce, though. There are an incredibly limited number of slots for lots and lots of people who apply. Judging from some people I know (both in the Teams and who tried to lateral transfer into the SEALs), the USNA gets the biggest chunk of the FY spots.

I don't remember where I read it but I saw somewhere saying that SEALs don't need a waiver for PRK, only LASIK. In other words for SEALs both are good to go.

The thing about SEAL OCs that always struck me as tough was the fact that they only allow their Officers to attend BUD/S once. If they fail thats it. Mind you BUD/S is possibly the most physically demanding program in the world. You definately have to be on top of your **** to even consider a program like that.
