Hey Buffalo Bill,

Mind telling us orange-and-white fellas what the different "upstairs" and "downstairs" jobs are?

Downstairs is Maint, upstairs is admin, ops, intel etc etc (worst of all...ADJ)

"BTW, I'm only doing this for you because I heard that Buffalo Bill charachter shoved a road flare up your bung hole..."

I finished TBS Oct 03 (Class 3-03) and I walked off the stage with my wings 16 Sept 05.
I didn't wait too long to start API (maybe a month) but primary took ~8 months, and advanced (helos) took another ~8 months. Those delays were mostly weather related though.

I recently was involved in a discussion about the Osprey and winging. Is it true that a potential Osprey pilot has to go through both the fixed and rotary wing pipelines before trainging on the Osprey? If so, when would that aviator wing, after the first or second pipeline completed? Would the eight year obligation not kick in until after both pipelines are completed, or would a year + of the obligation used up in the second pipeline?

Newly selected Osprey pilots have to complete most, if not all, of the maritime advanced syllabus in Corpus, followed by a significantly reduced portion of the helo advanced syllabus. Specifically, they don't have to do RIs in the helo track, but they do have to do all the fams, tactics (to include NVG flights), forms, and BIs. Their obligation does not begin until they wing, which is after they complete their part of the helo syllabus.

Also the commitment for helicopters and multi engines is 6 years and jets is 8 years but is that from when you get your bars or when you get your wings?

Wings. With a "but."

Let's put it this way, if you're lucky enough to do some PTAD in your OSS office after your commission, that will take 2 months off of your active time. Then TBS gives everyone 6 months. So going into flight school, most of the guys from my district have had 8 months time in service already. Then that's all they have till they're done flight school. By that time, the ground contracts have 1 year left on their contracts, while the air contracts have 5 or 7 years.

Think of it this way, instead of 6 or 8 years, think 8 or 10 years, because while that won't be how much time in service you'll get, that's how much time (from your reporting to TBS) you will be active under your contract.

Of course, maybe this changes. The military always does. Before, air contracts got sent to Pax River for their flight physical, and virtually last week they start saying "Oh, send the candidates down to Pensacola from now on."
