Quick 4th of July Question

FLYMARINES

Doing Flips and Shit.

I am going to a church service with my family the Sunday before the 4th. My dad informed me that the orchestra would be playing the Marine Corps Hymn as well as the other service's songs. He told me that I should stand up at the playing of the Marine Corps hymn. Now I know I should always stand at the playing of the Hymn. One of the classroom instructors at PLC Jrs. informed us that we should always stand up when we hear the Hymn, even when watching a movie alone that plays it or he would find us and tear us a new one, etc. But I feel in this case our church is doing it to honor Marines who have served, and being as I am not yet a Marine and have only graduated Jrs., that I don't deserve the right to stand. What are ya'lls opinions on this as Marine Officers, should I stand at the playing of the Hymn or not?

You should do a half stand/squat thing. After you finish seniors you can stand all the way up.

HAHAHAHAHA - You got me, very funny! Actually that is pretty good. I am a hugh fan of witty, smart-ass comments. :icon_smil But now I will need a serious answer.

If you want to be a Marine, the sooner you start acting like one the better. Just, if somebody asks if you're a Marine, make sure they know the truth.

If you look all disheveled (unshaven, long hair, ratty clothes) then sit your ass down.

Concur, since you know it's going to happen, you ought to be dressed well and be sporting a high and tight so folks won't even have to wonder why you are standing.

Thanks for the replies Crowbar and Heyjoe. I realize the importance of looking like a Marine. I will look completely professional and will have a high and tight, cleanshaven, nicely dressed, etc. Thanks again.

You have fun with the high and tight. That just ain't my style, never has been, never will be. I still have whitewalls but I like to have a semi-normal looking head of hair.

Some Marines don't sport high and tights? How come I have never seen this?

While I am also a fan of the "crouching tiger" approach to this quagmire, I will submit that to remain seated would be in poor taste given your current status. Go ahead and pop tall and do the old man proud (high and stupid optional).

Just a quick nit-pick; it's The Marines Hymn, not The Marine Corps Hymn.

Some Gunny will give you a ration of sh!t if you call it the other way.

And technically, your supposed to stand for Anchors Aweigh, too.

To be exactly correct, you need to add the apostrophe to show possession so it is the Marines' Hymn, but many folks refer to it as the Marine Corps Hymn. If you are heading to any type of officer training, you'll need to know the correct title and every line. Here's the official site: http://www.marines.com/page/usmc.jsp?pageId=/page/Detail-XML-Conversion.jsp?pageName=Marine-Hymn&flashRedirect=true

I suck at punctuation. Weakness noted.

Only a complete boot (or sailor) would call it the Marine Corps Hymn. It's borderline blasphamy in the Corps. Kind of like calling the quarterdeck "the lobby".

At OCS you'll learn to sing all 3 verses. Tattoo them to your brain.

Already know all three verses, just had a momentary lapse of judgment. Won't happen again. Thanks for pointing that out or I might have said it accidentily to a Marine instead of just on an internet forum.
