Mrs Wink and son with two of the grandkids at their first airshow, Wings Over Houston last weekend. First time seeing the Rhinos, but it was a low show so you didn't get to see the extra power in the vertical. Missed my favorite, the tuck under roll/break. Interestingly, #5 had a problem and jumped into #7. Have only seen that once before. Also there was at least one issue with narration and maneuvers. Narrator announce opposing solo 4 point roles, but they simply rolled without pause. The maneuver appears on both low and high show, so that doesn't explain it.

Good show. Saw the A-1 Skyraider in an airshow for the first time. Nice job given how big and heavy it is. Big hit with the 3 year old boy was the F-16 demo (sigh). He was impressed by all the visible afterburner passes. So you can imagine how much he liked the wall of flames the CAF Tora Tora Tora show put down.

Those Rhinos put on a good show. Got to see the Blues in Charleston earlier this year. It was my daughter's first time seeing them and she was impressed.

Last time I saw the blue angels they still flew the legacy hornets, is there a noticeable difference in the show with the super bugs?

Not as much as I expected, and nearly all of it is a bit better.

I thought the increased size of the jets would show off more imperfections in close formations, but that really didn't seem to be much of a thing. (If you've ever seen an SU-27 formation team, you know what I mean).

It's really a great show... thought I'd really like to see them (and the 'Birds) completely re-imagine their routine and come up with something very unique and new.

Supposedly the Tbirds worked with Disney (I think) to redo their show. Didn't see that much difference honestly.

Saw the Su27 show at Paris years ago, that was interesting but I understand what your saying about bigger jets.

My favorite blue angel show will always be the A4s, they seemed to do so much with that little jet

I agree with respect to the A-4, but the low passes by the F-4 blues was just shatteringly fun.

Yeah, but the new Fat Albert doesn't have the rockets anymore. :(
1998, Blues Pensacola end of season show.

My good friend's brother was a Fat Albert pilot, and he and I got to ride on Bert for the Friday practice. My friend actually rode on the beam with his head sticking out of the bubble at the top of the aircraft. I was seated in the back left, sitting sideways, facing right, about where the JATO rockets were strapped on. Don't know about now, but back then they let a bunch of military dependents ride along too... I'm guessing they were related to Blues' team members, but really don't know.

We lineup on the runway and they run the power up. When they released brakes, the acceleration was amazing and I thought the JATOs had maybe fired. I was wrong.

At 130 knots, they lit off the JATOs. Wow! Hahaha! It was LOUD!! Bert took off like a scalded cat and up... we... gooooo....

As Bert approached the apex, they began the pushover. I still remember the woman sitting across from me: Lots of long, blonde hair that was loose... and I watched all of that hair float up above her head. It was a sight!

The rest of the flight was just sheer terror. When we were in a steep right bank maneuvering back to show center, I was looking across the cargo deck and out the small window... and seeing Pensacola neighborhoods, houses, and pools going by very fast... and real close to us. We were LOW.

It was a 7 minute E-ticket ride (you whippersnappers can look that up) that I'll never forget. What a rush.

I never got to ride on Bert again. I remember them saying the JATOs were going to end "in a few years"... but I think they lasted for another 10+ years.

As a side note, the Bert Boys took great care of the two of us AF guys every year we came to the PCola end of season. They are a class act and never buy beers when I'm around them.

A/C Wings Here
A good while back my bud was doing his twilight tour on Alberts flight crew, We hooked up and the crew invited me to tag along for the day and gave me a seat for the JATO shot. After a good greasy breakfast and a bucket of coffee we get out to the bird and I was talking with the Air Force SP who was on guard while the guys pre-flighted and got the bottles mounted. My gut started grumbling and I knew I was gonna have a real problem with the negative G's so we let the guard go in my place for the ride. I took care of the problem and may or may not have had a part in organizing the ground crew in a version of Death Race 2000 with the Security ATVs while we waited for the bird to come back.

The wind actually kicked up quite a lot once I was up. Here’s a shot of some giant Navy balls, used I think, to shrink all the balls of our enemies.
