Seeing that pic of the ramp reminds me of a story I may have told years ago. I was on a cross country in an A-4 & stopped at Grissom AFB (a SAC base at that time) for gas. The transient ramp was completely empty when I entered. Diagonally across the ramp at the far opposite corner, was the civilian lineman waiting to park me. Since the ramp was empty, I just cut diagonally across the ramp & headed straight for him. He was using the standard right arm extended above his head, left arm extended out in front of him, signalling where I should be lining up to park. As I swung in for the final line up, he started giving alternating left & right signals for my line up. I thought "I can't be that screwed up with my taxi."
As I got closer, he stepped to the side and started giving me head nods left & right for fine tuning. As he gave me the stop signal, I noticed he had a big grin on his face, which he maintained as he chocked me and gave me the shutdown signal. When I climbed out, he was waiting, still grinning. He then explained, "I just love you Navy carrier guys coming in here. I always give you guys the fine-tuning directions to watch & see how close you follow. Air Force guys, you can't get them to get off the yellow lines. They'll taxi an extra half mile to stay on them." We had a good laugh together.
