While I certainly understand the issue of an “unauthorized” landing for non-emergency purposes, this seems kind of petty on the part of the land owner. Come winter storms he’d probably be the first demanding a Guard helicopter brave snow and ice to deliver feed or rescue him. That said, my defense would be to ask where the skyward facing “no trespassing” are placed!

They did steal something of value from his property. On the taxpayers’ dime no less. Yeah, I can’t argue with that and I assume they’ll gat ( and deserve) a fine. Still, if you look at a map of the area it is a patchwork of private, state, and federal land. I know, no excuses.

It would be interesting to know if they assumed it was some type of public land. Laws on antler harvesting are a patchwork between state-owned and types of federal land. I wouldn't feel comfortable grabbing them most places, unless they were on an animal that I legally killed.
If I were their CO, I would not allow this kind of thing, for exactly this reason.
I doubt they thought too much if it was public or private…they just saw the opportunity. The rules are indeed crazy and made worse by the distant possibility that the land owner might be leasing from BLM meaning it isn’t actually private property. In this case the soldiers were charged, so it is clearly private property.
As to how the command reacts it’s important to remember this is the Army National Guard. If the pilot is part of the “inner set” (a local good-old-boy) the punishment could be as light as some time in front of the boss or a Letter of Reprimand that few will see. I have heard that locally, the property owner is calling it a “military coverup” and others just a lark. I’m sure the local eye-rolling for both sides is way out of control.

Always nice when I get a student ping me online that he/she has passed their checkride. In this case Instrument-Airplane rating. I really enjoy teaching and giving instruction and figuring out how people learn and tailoring instruction to fit their natural affinity to achieve. The Instrument Rating is where a recreational Private Pilot really puts things together and ups their game to a more professional level.
I truly get satisfaction from doing this kind of work. I hope I get to do more CFI work as I age...

On a funny note, base ops and transient alert were befuddled when the crews headed out to their jets for departure, all geared to up and declined the crew van. 🤣
