Recruiter Trouble

I'm having some trouble with my recruiter. I like him and he's generally a good guy. But he hasn't really been up to date. I still haven't found out about my board results, even though I've been to MEPS. I'm just wondering if anyone has any advice. Is there some way to get another recruiter to help me out without putting this guy in hot water?

He's probably a busy guy. Remember: no one cares about your packet as much as you do. Do you do your part, or do you wait for him to do all the work?

I feel like I've done my part. My paper work is all done, I'm getting my background investigated, I've gone through MEPS. I call him for updates, but he's always telling me he will call me back. My big concern is that he doesn't tell me what boards I'm up for, and can never remember what I'm applying for. I just don't know of any way to check this stuff out, now the NYusn blog doesn't post the info anymore.

Have you tried calling/emailing him nonstop to get your results? Even though he's busy, it couldn't hurt. If anything, try physically going to your OR to get whatever you need to get done and to find out the board results, if it's not too far a drive.

PM me your entire story, but leave out identifying information. I'm being advised by a couple of CRUITCOM folks who have established a pretty clear process in case your OR is truly not on the ball. However, that may not be the case, and in most cases, it isn't. There a number of steps that you must go through before requesting a new officer recruiter, and this should be seen as a last resort.

I have been through this process, and recently helped another applicant on AW go through this process. When you get an officer recruiter who you have lost trust in due to a sustained pattern of behavior, it is likely time to ask for someone else.

As was said, it's YOUR career, no one will care about it more than YOU.

Ouch. Hmm... In that case, if he could maybe specify very briefly repeated behaviors? The big point here is if the OR has shown a distinct pattern of behavior of not getting the job done.

Every OR gets overwhelmed at times, especially around now, given how many boards aren't meeting every month, or boards are getting moved around... You going off an OR that is doing his job as best he can is just going to make you look like a tool.

That's precisely why I went to senior officers at CRUITCOM for advice, and they've given me a process I can share with others, if it's necessary.

So here's my brief story. In April I had my first meeting, filled out my paper work, and took the astb. I went for intel and swo. Everything got filled out and I was told that I would be in for the may boards. By mid June I hadn't heard anything so I called. My recruiter barely remembered me, and thought I had applied for supply and nfa. He then told me I could apply for July. I went to meps at the end of June, and called today to see if my waiver was approved, I had shoulder surgery a year ago. My OR told me that I would need to see the doctor for a waiver. He then told me that I was non-select for intel but was waiting on supply, when I asked he said "oh ye

Sorry I'm using my girlfriends iPad and apparently I don't know how to type. Anyways he said oh yeah swo. He then told me I could reapply if I was non-select for both. Unfortunately he got off the phone before answering any of my questions. So basically I dontknow which month I applied for, and I'm hoping for the right programs. I was thinking of asking the guy who does nyusn blog for the June intel results to see if I'm on the list, but like I said I don't want to get my OR in any trouble. I like the guy and he's nice enough, but I want to make sure I get my chance at the right boards

This isn't a matter of nice or not nice. This is a matter of whether or not he sounds like he's doing his job or not. Let's see if I get this straight:

1) You were told you would be put in for the May boards; you weren't.
2) You were not put in for the next boards: June.
3) Your OR could not remember who you were or what you applied for.
4) You went to MEPs and therefore already knew you had to have a waiver, which you applied for, yet your OR said you needed one after the fact (the implication here is that the OR didn't realise you already were waiting on said waiver, which shows disorganisation).
5) You went up for the July Intel and Suppo boards and already know you are a non-select for Intel (wait, what? It's only half way through July, you couldn't have July results already...)
6) Your OR excused himself from the conversation before you were satisfied you had all the answers.
7) You have no idea what programs you're actually even being seen by boards for.

Three questions I have are:

1) Something is definitely fishy here; is there anything you've left out?
2) How many times have YOU taken the initiative to call, email, show up in the office, be a squeaky wheel? If you're not a high profile candidate and show how much you want it, while other candidates are doing so, you will receive less attention.
3) Have you tried to sit down with the OR, figuratively or literally, and dispassionately ask the tough questions?

If you haven't done 2 or 3, you need to before you place all the blame on him. If you've done 2 and it just isn't working, you need to do 3 before trying anything else. If you've done 3, time to call your Officer Programs Officer, and dispassionately direct those tough questions to him or her.

After that point, we can discuss the issue more in detail, but I'd prefer to do it over PM somehow (maybe I can send you a PM with my email address?), because I might have to get CRUITCOM people involved. It probably WON'T come to that though, and we should try very hard to make sure it doesn't. Jumping the CoC is never a good idea.

No PM function for me. Good news it's only 10 posts not 50. I think I've tried most of what you said. I call him to check, I've visited in person, hell I'll probably call him today. I'll try being dispassionate this time, and let you know how it goes

Are you keeping verbose documentation? If not, write down everything you remember in detail, and keep a record of your activities with names, dates, and times for everything you do and everyone you speak to. This will make it much easier in case a pattern has clearly developed and you need to take it up with the OPO or even higher if the situation is not resolved at a lower level. If it goes up so high as to have actually be speaking with people at CNRC, then you will be expected to have such documentation.

It's not a diary or journal, do not interject personal "feelings" into it. Like Good old Sgt Friday, just the facts.

Has MEPS said anything to you about your med waiver?

If he's saying you need to see a doc for a waiver it may be that MEPS put you in for a waiver based on your previous visit, but now BUMED wants you to go back for a seperate consult before approving or disapproving (a not that uncommon occurance, especially for surgical procedures on limbs required for Navy required exercises). I'd ask for more information about your med waiver and the status of it.
