No officer candidate is a "proven talent". They still give out air contracts though. He may have come off sounding bad, but there's nothing wrong with knowing what you want and going for it.

Agreed on all counts. My only point was that it was a pretty presumptious comparison. The guy has no idea if he would be a better pilot than an NFO, and neither does the military, and they probably don't care as long as they are filling the seats they need to fill. Saying he would be better suited to serve his country as a pilot than an NFO is just personal opinion, based off no experience whatsoever.
