reporting for duty in Pensacola

I will be graduating soon from OCS (3 weeks). It is my understanding that people in the aviation community do not receive their orders till the week before or day of graduation. I was wondering how i would go about using my leave days to visit family before i have report in Pensacola, Fl. who to talk to and what is the SOP.

You won't get any leave before checking into API. When you check in find out how long it will take to class up from STUCON and you may get leave approved if it's not too soon. You probably won't be able to take leave until you are done with PSD and NOMI.

Your order will have a report no later then date which gives you a few weeks. In reality you have 5 days, not counting Sunday, before they start charging you leave. As long as you check in before your NLT date you don't need to clear that, you'll just have leave automatically deducted. Things might have changed so anyone with more up to date gouge feel free to correct me.
However, talk to your chief about it. He or she will tell you like it is and won't steer you wrong.
Just a piece of advice, don't check in at the last possible day, it looks bad.

To follow up on what Tom said, there is a high probability that you will have the chance to take a good amount of leave after you check into API. You need to have your checklist items complete (on the welcome packet), and you need to not be in the middle of IFS. Considering the wait for the guys who did have to do IFS has been at least a few weeks before even classing up (for IFS that is) recently, I will say that the wait will only increase in the next month or so. You will more than likely be sitting on your butt in A-pool in one way or another for the next 2-3 months minimum, unless you are an SNA who is IFS complete.

Don't be surprised if its only about 2 weeks that one is in A-pool right about now... at least for sna

Keep in mind graduation is going on for ROTC/USNA. Soon A Pool will be back to the idea no stash jobs.

I don't really think anyone would care if you wait until the last possible day to check in to API; you're just going to be sitting around anyway.

I went back home for about a week and a half before flying down to Pensacola and checking in. "Leave in conjunction with PCS move" is what it's called. Then I took another huge amount of leave after getting there. BDCP is the way to go.

Threadjack/ I didn't want to start a new thread and it is pertinent to API but how many sets of CNT Khakis will you want to have? I was thinking 2 since I will be in a flight suit most of the time once I get to the back end of API but was just curious as to how many others were getting. Cheers in advance.

2 sets of polywools was the standard for aviators in my class.

Don't get more CNT's, polywool is way better down here

It doesn't even matter once you reach july/aug. I would go out to apool muster for all of 5 mins (in my polywool) at 0730 and still have some nice swamp a$$. That also might just be because im a sweaty pig too...

so with reporting for either IFS/API within about 5 days or so from graduation of OCS, are most people getting reporting early to find apartments or living on base for the first week then finding apartments, not sure if that is even an option, or do most live on base in general, that is being single with no family involved

fair enough.....I'd just say that for general wear in most climates, I find the polywool to be more comfortable.

Just curious, I saw that you have to take care of NOMI stuff at API. Does this mean that you have to complete another flight physical, in addition to the one done at OCS? Also, I talked to my recruiter today about the exact qualifications for being IFS exempt and he told me that you need your entire PPL. I know this has been discussed many times, but I was just wondering if anything has changed recently from just needing your cross-country solo for being IFS exempt.
