and the auto-racing restriction is moronic, its once again coming from people who have zero idea and what is involved (I use to auto-x all the time in P'cola while I was in API and Primary)

that being said, track days are safer then driving on the roads in Corpus

yeah, Auto-X is pretty much completely harmless. Car track days are pretty safe, too. I'm sure it can happen, but i've never heard of anyone sustaining an injury at one.

Motorcycle track days are a little more dangerous--but still a safer alternative than backroad carving (i've walked--and sometimes ridden--away from several motorcycle wrecks on the street, including one at 50 mph into the side of a mountain and one at 75 mph where i tumbled about 10 times, but in general, street riding is more dangerous).

I honestly don't get it... you can't do all that stuff till you get winged... so after they have spent all that money on your training and you finally serve a real purpose, you can go do all that crazy stuff. Is there some sort of rationale behind all this that I don't know about it???
The thought process is that if you get hurt, you might spend a significant period of time out of the cockpit which means lots more time getting "Back in the Saddle." This is not necessarily the case once you're all quallified in your final aircraft. Training commands have a little more leeway with liberty restrictions like that. Although there are exceptions, the Navy can't really legally prevent you from participating in "legal" activities that aren't "prejudicial to good order and discipline" or "service discrediting."

motorcycles: gotta have a vest, proper PPE, and to drive on base, a base safety course.

OPNAVINST 5100.12G... know it, live it, love it. I've become intimatley familiar with FL, MS, and OPNAVINST laws as far as motorcycles go lately.

http://neds.daps.dla.mil/Directives/5100_12g.pdf

And CNATRA says you will wear an ORANGE REFLECTIVE VEST 100% of the time you are riding on or off base. Icon makes a sweet mil spec vest that dosen't look like a crossing guard vest. If you're in Pensacola, Turn One Performance in Milton will hook you up with one for 50 bucks.
Technically, the Navy says that you're supposed to wear all the PPE junk 100% of the time. There were rumors going around in the mid 90s that if you got in an accident without all your PPE, the Navy would pull your medical benefits and make you pay for your own medical treatment, but that is BS. There is actual Navy case law that supports a rider WRT medical issues, PPE or otherwise. Needless to say, most people do not wear all the PPE off base. All that stuff is such a pain in the ass that I don't even ride my bike on base anymore.

Good Times,

Brett

Boating was on the list down here for API Checkin... A JAG gave us the PPE speal saying that you had to wear all of it, all of the time no matter what the state laws were, and you'd get stuck paying you med bills if you didn't follow the rules and screwed up.

I could swear that you can now wear the cool (bright colored) motorcycloe jackets instaed of the gay reflective vest ...

I'm pretty sure that the change was in the same message as the one allowing backpacks to be worn on the shoulder and duty cell phones on the belt (both in uniform, and subject to restrictions).

I gave a quick look for the message, but have to go and fly now ... anyway, perhaps someone remembers which message that was?

Naturally - going to a licensed operator is a no-no, but a PR can haul your a$$ behind an F-150 in Alabama.

...I love knee-jerk reactions...

A lot of you people have no clue why these restrictions are in effect. Are they fair? Not necessarily. Are they reality? Yep. Deal with it. People got themselves hurt and/or killed, causing this reaction. It was a long time coming.

For those of you guys still in flight school (or waiting to class up), are they still booting people who have been injured and require long periods of time to heal? Shortly after I finished I heard that if you broke your arm or something (and you were doing something kida stupid), you'd get fixed up and shown the door.... I don't know if this was bum gouge or not.

propstop, I haven't heard or seen that, I had a buddy in primary who went down for 4 months because of shoulder surgery

and yes, I know exactly why these restrictions went into effect, I play poker with a stud who was on the boat at the time of the incident (he had been in the getup earlier in the day), nonetheless, it still is a knee jerk reaction, not like we haven't seen any of that happen in the wing down here

The desicion is above our pay grade... and it's not our/your place to second guess. Obviously with a lot of the sitting around everyone is doing, people are finding creative ways to hurt themselves.

You make it sound like an officer like quality to eat ****. When you hear every one in the wing (01 and up) make jest at the order – I think it is safe to say that it is a knee jerk reaction.
