Returning to Service

Good afternoon all. I’m well on the way to returning to the reserves after a three year Covid induced hiatus. I was first contacted by a recruiter about two years ago and nearly hung up on him. Since then after prayerful consideration and lots of discussion with my wife, I’ve decided to pursue my commission and finish my time to retirement (or beyond, perhaps). I left as a 17-year CDR after a two year mobilization.

Anyone else either in the process or thinking about it?

Hail Mary here, but any SELRES flying jobs open to an O-5 overgrade waiver? I talked to a buddy who retired and works as a contract pilot for CNATRA, he said it’s almost certainly a no-go there due to my rank and no previous CNATRA time. I’ve got about 1800 hours, mostly in 53’s and 60’s.

Given my new background as a firefighter/paramedic, I'm also very interested in NEPLO. Having flown a decent amount of HADR and now on the civilian side of that on a daily basis, I feel like it would be a good fit. Thoughts?

I’m no longer up on the administrative workings…but I love the patch you’re using as your icon/avatar!

Short answer, you're unlikely to find a flying gig as an O-5 walking in the door. Everyone in a hardware unit wants an over-grade waiver at O-5 and there aren'y many to give out, although previously qualified HM might get you somewhere in Norfolk. They always seem to be hurting for bodies, although I'm way out of touch on the sundown and what's going on with manning there.

General manning being shit in the reserves for Officers, you can likely find a SELRES gig on a staff if you can pass all the screening stuff. Last I checked new affiliates still get a 2 year MOB deferral. At 18 months in an unprotected unit you could get tagged for a MOB at 24 months, although the current options seem less awful than 5 years ago, and O-5 MOBs seem less than O-3/O-4 ones.

If crossing the finish line for retirement/healthcare is the goal, just affiliate, do a year or so, then drop to the VTU for points for a few years.

Cool appreciate the reply. my understanding is the reserve component at HM-15 is stacked with people due to the merger. Who knows if I’d be welcome regardless.

Originally they were gonna bring me into the VTU, but the EO gets me SELRES. The healthcare my city provides ain’t great, Tricare reserve select is a better deal. So I want to hang onto that as long as possible. We’ll see how it goes, and see what else is out there.

Since you’re the current Skipper of HELNONMONKSPANKRON, I thought that you’d be up on all the administrative workings.

Regardless, I totally agree with you regarding @BMC_07 ’s icon/avatar…it’s pretty dang good, Skipper.
