What do both of you (A4s and Steve) think of the joint Russia/Chinese wargames?

What kind of "scary secret stuff" do they have?

Most of it is stuff we shouldn't be talking about here, but they have several systems in various warfare areas that are a generation better than our version of it. The also have numerous systems that we cannot defeat/defend against yet.

What worries me in particular of those two is that Russia is pretty much broke and they have some good technology. China has some $$ to spend and they need that technology. The two are a match made in heaven. The Russian navy is in such disrepair, it's pretty much a joke at this point, save their subs.

I'm not even going to hint at that.

Yes

I wouldn't exactly say that, but I think I know what you mean.

Although the Chinese have been building their military, they have a long way to go before they could really compete with us. Sure they have 1.3 billion possible conscriptees (realistically more like 250 million), but their military expenditures are less than 1/8th of ours and their Navy has yet to show any capability for blue water ops. Once you factor in how dependant they are on the US as far as trade goes, it would seem unlikely that they would accept the destruction of their own economy just to start some sh!t with us. Now, that's not to say that they shouldn't be watched, but the more they integrate into the globalized economy, that interdependance will make it increasingly important for them to play nice.

Good times,

Brett

I've got some knee-jerk opinions ... but lest the AW Ready Room Commandos take another opportunity to jump into old A4's "stuff" again (as they do on frequent occasions when we go posting geo-political) ... I want to read up about these "joint exercises" to get a clearer picture of the scope of it ... I only heard about it on the news. :) :icon_rast

BTW ... the ChiComs??? "Face" and "power" will alway trump "Trade" .... they have been doing this for centuries ....

The spending figures the Chinese publish are of dubious accuracy
How so? Please enlighten us, oh intel selectee. However one chooses to quibble over numbers, the fact remains that the Chinese military is, in its present state, far from being an offensive force capable of challenging the US. I wouldn't lose any sleep over some kind of Chinese Pearl Harbor reprise.

I definitely believe that.

Are they present at the Panama Canal?

I think I remember reading somewhere not too long ago that they have operations at the Canal, but I can't say where it was and therefore can't prove it. I'm sure that would be an attractive "target" for them however. Shut it down, and you've created a whole world of hurt.

Not a genius or an expert, just a bored summer intern who reads the news when his boss isn't looking.

"China's own defense reports failed to provide detailed information on plans for equipment procurement and other vital details."
Well, I don't know about you, but I'm not going to rely on CNN (or any other mass media source) for an honest assesment of anyone's military capes.
