For single guys, PB for sure. Close to the freeway and just a hop away from Miramar. Mission Valley is a good second option. Also close to the freeway, good transportation (trolley gets you downtown really quick) and some good places to go out down there too. I live in La Mesa, it's more east of Mission Valley, but I would want to live in PB the most out of all the areas here.

If I were single, I'd live downtown, and make friends with someone who lived in PB and had a comfy couch. Let them live amongst the drunks and the theft, and let me pass out on their couch after long nights in PB.

And when I wanted to go somehwere a bit nicer, I'd have the entire gaslamp in my backyard. If that's too far from Miramar for you'd, my next choice would be Mission Valley probably.

PB is great for visiting often, but IMO, not for living.

+1 Brilliant, per usual. ;)

There's a lot of bad gouge and disinformation in this thread already. Ask someone who has lived there for several years and not one of these drive-by helo or Hornet RAG types.

Hillcrest is actually fairly nice in terms of culture, really lively. There are lots of gays, yes, but it's interesting, and I have no problem with them. Just beware of gangs of lesbians that rape females, no joke. It's rare, but it's happened.

North Park is a fairly nice, quaint, diverse area, but has it's issues with crime here and there. El Cajon blvd is the worst area; it's packed full of prostitutes. Other then that, nothing major to my knowledge.

Either way, you're extremely close to all the cool stuff SD has to offer. Out of all the places I've been to in the World, Balboa park remains one of my favorite.

Just keep in mind that I don't live in those areas, I just frequent them. So take my word only as an observer.
Thanks for the input & disclaimer. Even though I'm a dude, I'll keep an eye out for the lesbian wolfpacks.

+1, unless you dig no personality, zits, and buckteeth. But I'll be damned if those ladies don't find the cure for cancer or herpes some day.

You must be talking 'bout the girls from La Jolla Country Day School. In which case, be careful :D
We're starting to get data points on Otto's ideal woman. Once we know what he thinks of Guam, we should be able to figure it out.

There is wisdom here. Nelle, you'll go far in this company.

I lived in PB and loved it, but my truck did get broken into twice (he stole the fucking first aid kit...who steals a first aid kit!?)

Downtown is pimp and more affordable than you'd think, if you're single, don't mind the condo lifestyle and can find a roomie or two. It's central to everything, though you'll have to gird your loins for the freeways every morning.

Just depends on how you like to live. Me, I'd rather live in a nice area convenient to everything and commute. Some don't want to commute at all and would rather deal with long drives if/when you want to go out for the evening.

OK, I'm headed to SD in a few months, and after reviewing all the San Diego threads again, I have to ask: Are North Park and Hillcrest just terrible? Or do those of you who have bashed it just hate seeing gay people around? I haven't seen any criticism of it that didn't also reference its... well, larger-than-they-like homosexual population.

I'm going to do some neighborhood scouting next week when I'm in SoCal, so I'll see for myself, but so far from the whitewashed view of the internets the areas around Balboa park look relatively safe, affordable, and close to work.

Hillcrest is faaaaabulous. For a married dude, if you're very secure in your masculinity and have a wife who likes antiquing, it's a clean and very safe area, convenient to Balboa Park and you could do worse. If you're a single straight dude, it's a neighborhood full of restaurants with food you don't want and can't afford, stores that sell useless shit, men who want you and women who want you dead.

When I met my husband he was living downtown right across the street from Horton Plaza. He lived in a 1 bedroom with parking, and no roommates.

He actually didn't have too bad of a commute from there, 20-30 minutes depending on traffic.

I would second this as a place for a singleton to live, I was pretty impressed with what he had compared to my studio sh*thole in LA.

Well, let's see: Married, check. Secure in masculinity, check. I'll be living by myself/with roommates bc Mrs Beans has to live in LA for work. And... not sure about the antiquing, either. 2 for and 2 against. What to do?!

Tierrasanta is really nice and minutes from Miramar. We have tons of Marines living here.

Plus the Fortuna Mountains offer a GREAT short or long hike for the outdoor folks. Right off that exit. :)

I heard a little bit of the "gay neighborhood" from squadron mates when I lived in Ghent. Guess what? Gay guys take care of their houses and tend to not have cars on blocks in the front yard.

On the antiquing note:

Q: What do a gay guy and a married man have in common?
A: Both know what color mauve is and spend their sundays antiquing instead of watching football.

Where in LA will she be working? Have you thought about living north of Miramar?

Not an option, as she needs to live w/in 15min of work. Straight South from there puts us somewhere just South of Anaheim... not gonna happen.
