I think the big takeway is that nations don't have friends, they have interests. The Brits aren't in Afghanistan because they want to be friends with the Karzai govt - they have interests they want to protect. (They're also there because they are our friends, in a little bit of exception to the previous rule...)
If the Brits don't announce they capped an ISID guy because they don't want to upset the Pakistanis, or rile their own population, then they are protecting their interests - even though their interests might be at odds with Karzai's.
