What is the difference between Sea Combat Squadron and say anti submarine squadron. What is a Sea Combat Squadron?
 
As the S-3 became more of a multi-mission platform the name of the squadrons was changed from "Anti-Submarine Squadron" to "Sea Control Squadron". In fact, the S-3 has no ASW sensors now bit can still drop torpedos.

In the same vein, VAQ went from "Tactical Electronic Warfare Squadron" to "Electronic Attack Squadron".

SYSTEM DESCRIPTION

1. Operational Uses. S-3B Aircraft are tasked by the Carrier Battle Group Commanders to provide Anti-Air Warfare, Anti-Surface Warfare (ASUW), Counter-Targeting, Over-the-Horizon Targeting, surface surveillance and intelligence collection, electronic warfare, coordinated search and rescue, and fleet support missions, including air wing tanking. Deletion of ASW and Mining Warfare Missions for all S-3Bs was managed at the Type Commander and Functional Wing level and began in FY99. Deconfiguration of aircraft, in compliance with removal of ASW specific equipment, was accomplished in accordance with AFC 284, this change was completed in FY00.

F. AIRCRAFT AND/OR EQUIPMENT/SYSTEM/SUBSYSTEM REPLACED. AFC 284 redefined the composition of Sea Control Squadrons (VS). All selected S-3Bs were redesigned by removal of selected systems. The removal of these systems resulted in a weight reduction in excess of 834 pounds per aircraft. Systems removed from the S-3B include detection, receiving, processing, and delivery equipment for Acoustic/Magnetic ASW and Mining, and 44 of 60 Sonobuoy Chutes. After removal of these systems, associated wiring was stowed in place and blank-off plates installed internally and externally on the aircraft, as appropriate to seal off affected areas. Compliance with AFC 284 began late in FY99, and was completed in FY00. Specific ASW and Mining Mission equipment and systems removed are listed below.

Are you sure he's not referring to the Helicopter Sea Combat Squadrons, as opposed to Helicopter Maritime Strike?

They slipped the surly bonds of ASW long before 2000. :D
 
Gulf War I - The mighty Scud Hunt

I was pretty impressed with all the fighter weenies whining and complaining about how hard it was to detect, localize, and attack an Iraqi Scud launcher. They moaned like stuck pigs about all the flying around looking and searching waiting for some sort of cue (AWACs or some other National Asset) to give'em the fix on their target. Wah, wah, wah. :watching_

They were describing ASW. I guess the fighter bubbas just are addicted to fixed ground targets and inside-visual range bogeys. Having to actually search and detect a moving target - takes time, takes patience, and probably more maturity (and bladder) than they typically demonstrate. :icon_smil
 
This is what happens when you get a community who thinks a double-cycle hop is a "long flight." Damn lawn darts... :D
