This is a small job that a decent gunsmith can complete while you are standing there (assuming you have the new switch on hand). I’m all for the classics and love my 1911 above any and all 9mm types.
There are many aftermarket ambi safety choices for 1911s - many are 'drop in ' or near so. As Griz mentioned it's a very easy job for a local gunsmith as well.

1911s require good magazines. Wilson 47D is my go-to for 8 round magazines. They make 7 round flush fit mags as well. Epic reliability. When MARSOC ran 1911s, Wilson mags were the only choice for Marine armorers.

In the action shooting sports - e.g. USPSA - 9mm 1911's rule the "Single Stack" divisions now and are favored by the young top competitors in that division - 10 round magazines are max permitted. I shot USPSA for years when 1911 single stack division was just emerging - and found that my reloaded 200 grain, lead semi wadcutter lods worked best with a 14lb recoil spring. Bullets were cheap. Now powder and primers are expensive - .45 ACP uses a lot more powder than 9mm and the large pistol primers are no longer a common item to find at retail. When I was reloading 12 gauge shot shells I often used the same powder for both 12 gauge and .45 ACP.

I shoot competitively much less now - and when I do its with a striker fired semi-auto with an optic, in 9mm. 9mm is so inexpensive now at retail, its barely worth reloading.

where I am .45 is about $.55/rd compared to about .28 for 9mm retail
I’ll keep shooting my sig m18 and might put an optic on it. If I carry it will be the 9mm

But I would really like to have a 1911 in 45acp just because

If I really want to save $ I’ll shoot my ruger 10/22 at $.08/rd

I think the SA mil spec in .45 parkerized is perfect for what I’m looking for

Since it will be a range only pistol I’ll probably use it as is for a while and decide if I really need the ambi safety

Of course, if you really want to save money, go for one of these. Amazon delivers to your door without a gun store being involved.

Pellets run about $20 for 500, and you can shoot it in your back yard in most places. I have the .22 version and it clocks in at about 900 fps with lead pellets and 1200 fps with alloy. The kinetic energy is about the same as a 22 short round. The 10 round magazine makes it easier to shoot, but the break barrel effort is significantly higher than your standard Crossman pump bb gun.

Haha I’ve actually been looking at those
We have coyotes around our house and they sometime hang around the edge of the woods when the dog is out

I’m too close to the neighbors to use the .22 but maybe I can harass the coyotes with a pellet gun
Maybe if they get popped a few times they’ll go somewhere else
