Sen. Schumer gas for electric car trade in program?

Enjoy your EVs, fellas. Just don’t conflate that with “holier than thou” status
I promise - no virtue signalling here! The EV makes sense where I live with peak electricity at $0.085 (8.5 cents) per kwh. Coal dug from eastern Ohio, W. Virginia and KY and transported via barge down the Ohio River - married with level 2 home charging. I would not have considered it without this. Plus its a cool car on its own. Not for everyone, but right for me!

I bought a new Ioniq 5 today to replace my 2010 Outback.

I am really surprised at how well Hyundai has done with it. It drives as nice at the Volvo XC-40 and is a bit bigger, and it's definitely nicer inside than the Model Y. 250+ miles on a charge with the AWD model. All for 55k out the door, so about 10-20k less than the others.

We'll see how it works out for me, I don't do a lot of long distance driving, and I like the performance of the electric motor.

They are great cars. I almost bought one but the dealership experience and charging infrastructure put me off.. I ended up with a Tesla Model Y Performance. My other daily driver is a Hyundai Palisade; they are making great cars and have been for quite some time now.

@Swanee , @ChuckMK23 ,

What are you guys hearing about longevity of the battery packs? I'm curious what's being put out about the new models coming out. I realize there's likely a lot of "it depends" in the answer, so how manufacturers and users are breaking that down is nice to know as well. Do they consider battery life as degradation to 75% of original capacity? 50%? Less?

What sold me on my electric mower is the modular nature of the batteries- I can swap them into different tools and replace them individually if/when necessary, although they're manufacturer "rated" to last 10 years. Two years in with no observed loss of capacity, albeit at a much lower cycle rate than a daily driver car. FWIW, I have Milwaukee Lithium tool batteries 14+ years old that are still useful. I'll risk Murphy's intervention by saying haven't actually thrown away a lithium tool battery yet.

When I purchased my Tesla M3 RWD, I was briefed on the new LFP battery formulation - which is iron based. The guidance is to charge to 100% - nightly. Which is what I do. The battery is good for 20 years of cycles with no range degradation.

EPA range estimates are wildly overstated by all the OEMs due to flaws in EPA's model that encourages exaggerated range. Added to that, drag at high speeds and air temp directly impact range on a practical basis.

But it's still been very successful for me as a car. $41k - $7.5k tax credit. A good value I think. No complaints so far.

Hyundai says 70% is the magic number for their warranty. It's warranted for 10 years, and it transfers if I sell it. I was given the same info as @ChuckMK23 though, 20 years through normal cycles, recommend to charge it to 100% only with a L1 or L2 charger, L3 is recommended to top out at 80%. You can limit it down to whatever you want with the software. The dealership service folks really recommend to charge with with a level 2 charger whenever possible- they seem to think the L3 charges may wear stuff out faster. I don't know how much of that is based in reality and how much is based on hearsay and what not.

The battery is built by SK Innovations (SK, South Korea... they also make all of the batteries for Samsung phones, watches, and tablets), who also builds batteries for Ford and Volkswagen.

It's definitely a gamble on a relatively new technology but even with a 30% loss I'm still able to get to work and the local hockey rinks without any trouble.

I'm really interested to see what the Michigan cold weather is going to do to battery performance.

Water, fertilizer, and more water. Then water it again... Our water bill is high enough that my neighbors and I are looking into having a well dug to provide non-potable water for our irrigation systems so we're not wasting money by watering our lawns with drinking water.

I'm in the market. I bought the stuff today to wire up a 50amp, 240v outlet into my garage. Was thinking about the ChargePoint Home Flex seems nice in that I have 3 years of free charge point charging in SW Michigan (essentially Grand Rapids, Kalamazoo, and Battle Creek) from my dealership and it will run off the same app.

But it's a lot more $$$ than the others. The Emporia one get's great reviews for 30% less on the price.

What do you use?

I basically wired the Tesla OEM Mobile charger in my garage with an Amazon bracket and chord holder to a 240v 30 Amp plug in my garage - it gives me Level 2 and seems to work well. I've had no problems charging overnight.

The Base CE folks have advertised that L2 charging is coming on base next year - will see. PXL_20230801_162926451.jpgPXL_20230801_162931849.jpgPXL_20230731_234147858.jpg

Is your garage insulated? I would think protecting them from temperature extremes is the name of the game, just like tool batteries (although mine live in an uninsulated garage and seem to do OK). You'll probably also see a drop in battery capacity when it's cold.

Strangely enough it's about 50/50. This fall I'm going to blow in insulation into the voids on the one wall and the one partial wall that isn't insulated, as well as insulate the door. That will help with heating the master bedroom (which has the floor insulated in the spots above the garage) a bit more as well.
