Unfortunately I don't have enough time to sell my house before OCS. I'm hoping I do get orders back in this area (VA Bch, Norfork) and if I do I plan to sell the house anyway. I probably could have sold my house if I hustled but I really didn't want the headache right now. Plus I currently have a roommate.
You might try to let out another room. Even if you do get back to Norfolk (which is quite possible) it will not be for about 2 years. Looking around the helo squadrons, about half of the Navy students are JGs by the time they earn their wings. P-3s take about the same, strike(jets) and E2/C2 take longer. I might still wing as an Ensign, but I have been pretty lucky (so far) and have not been stuck in any waiting pools for more than a week or two.
Here's some questions for you pdx, thanks for you help.
When do we get orders to our next duty station? Do we leave OCS the day of graduation and report straight to our follow on school? How do we go about getting stashed if we have to wait to class up?
You will report to NASC (Naval Aviation Schools Command) on Friday afternoon after you commission. They will start the check in process and give you the weekend off. On Monday you will continue check-in tasks and be placed in A-pool (pre API waiting). You can only apply for leave or OHARP after you have met the requirements for BOLTC and IFS, and you have completed all the check-in paperwork (including a NAMI med up-chit). The wait in A-pool is quite variable. Don't pay much attention to people talking about how long or short your wait will be. Even the student control office can't really predict more than a few weeks in advance. It is amazing how fast an enormous pilot backlog can turn into a pilot shortage (and vice-versa). If you have a short wait, you will probably just muster. Depending on the prevailing mood of the student control officer (STUCON), you will either phone muster, muster everyday in person in khakis, or somewhere in the middle. If you settle in for a longer wait, they may choose to give you a stash job, or you can find a stash job for yourself. They usually will not authorize stash duty outside the local area. Although I have seen a few priors get hooked up with TAD orders to their old squadrons, etc.
Feel free to keep asking if there are terms or references you are not familiar with. Also, you might want to check out some of the old threads in the OCS forum. I know that myself and others posted some good info in them.
