HMS Venturer (P68), A British V-class submarine,

The only submarine (publicly known) to have sunk another submarine while both were underwater. A fascinating short story, it sank U-864 in early 1945 which was carrying advanced technology to Japan.

Happened to see an article on one of the first Russian nuclear submarines: the Hotel class K-19 (apparently nicknamed "Hiroshima"). The story was later made into a decent movie called K-19, The Widowmaker starring Harrison Ford and Liam Neeson.

Length: 374' Beam: 30' 5000 tons submerged. Commissioned in 1961, decommissioned in 1990. (The accident occurred in 1961)

Its just something Shoes can do... I think it counts as sea duty but it’s sequenced in as shore tour, or at least that used to be the case. I once met a guy coming off being the XO; he said it was an interesting tour, as far as doing something different.

I remember there being plans to sail/tow her down the coast to New York, I think for the bicentennial, but the light started flashing

That and there are politics involved, as in the city of Boston along with the state of Massachusetts and its politicians haven't wanted to see her go away much at all since they see her as 'their' ship. Pretty sure there was an article or letters in either Naval History magazine or Proceedings about it a few years ago, mentioned the Navy had actually thought about doing an actual cruise like they had done back in the 30's but the local pols (the US Senators in particular) largely nixed it.

Not quite. Certain Chief Selects can go and do their Chief games onboard rather than doing them locally. Obviously there's a certain quota and a Select is hand-picked. I think it was during my DH tour that we had a Select get to go there. I would think that would be a cool way to get pinned.

In Massachusetts Bay she sailed under her own power in '97, I don't think she's left Boston since she last arrived in 1934.

She was out under her own power about 5 years ago for some anniversary, The day was crappy but she had a bunch of surface ships escort her and a good sized Navair flyover. Being as she was built right across the harbor from where she is berthed and is a major attraction I wouldn't be holding my breath waiting for any politicians to give her up.

I was amazed by how small she was. I think she was considered a 5th rate.
