SNFO Primary with kids

Right now I'm an SNFO waiting to start NIFE, I was wondering if anyone has experience going through the pipeline with kids. I've got a toddler at home, and any advice on how to handle juggling it all from primary through advanced.

I did it in 1996. Had a wife and two daughters (3 & 6). Takes a good balance between family and studying/flying, but you can do it. While single JOs are out partying, you are home with the wife and kiddos. Remember, your spouse and kids are a lifetime commitment, while the military is a much shorter period....do not ignore your family, because it will not end well.

Have you had a sit down discussion with your spouse to manage expectations?

It's tough but it can be done. Think of it like going through a very demanding grad school - med school etc. Make sure you and the spouse sit down and discuss how you're going to balance the whole work-life thing, because it's not like your time will be all your own after hours or weekends. If you're like most cones you'll be living in the books when you're not actually flying, and if Stucon needs to catch up on X'es you can count on being sent out for weekend cross-countries (which are actually pretty good deals, usually, so you don't want to miss out on them if you can help it). That said, agreed with @ea6bflyr - don't neglect the family, either.

Focus on flight school for now but enjoy it, you are going to have much more free time with the family now then when you hit the fleet.

I have a 4 year old and a baby right before classing up for NIFE (2024). The biggest thing that helped was having her month here for most of NIFE. Took a month off and then immediately classed up. I was able to spend a lot of time studying which was very helpful but fuck those test (they’re dumb in my opinion). Her mother left right before my check ride and it was fine afterwards. Once checked into TW-6, I took another month and some change of baby leave, leaving me with two week for later. Honestly I did t need too because of the waiting period to class up but I didn’t want to stand watch or have to check in every day. Now, going thru primary, it’s not that bad for myself and wife. We had many discussions about before and she knows it’s for my Job. I haven’t put them first before my studies but I let her know that tonight or weekend is not for going out (for myself). I plan on putting VT-86 as my number one.

Honestly, the academics is really what you have to worry about. It’s just 3 weeks. 3 weeks of suck, after that it’s been pretty chill

I hate auto correct, there are other mistake but want this one to stand out. I put my family first and then I study while in primary.
