So after OCS...

SNA select OCS 8Sept07, ProRec SNA 26Jan09
I know once you go to OCS, it's 13 weeks, then - hopefully - you graduate, all that fun stuff. What I'm wondering, from the guys that have already been there, is what happens right after you graduate? Do you go straight to aviation training (I'm SNA contract), like right then, do you get a couple weeks off, do you TAD? I'm just trying to figure out, logistically, where I go and what I do immediately after I leave RI. Is it straight to P'cola?

Right now they'll give you 7-10 days leave, and then you either start IFS or class up for API within a few weeks. Not much time off and TAD/OHARP is out of the question for SNAs. NFOs are a different story, as they have a nice 28 week wait.

28 weeks leave?!

Just to clarify, the 7-10 days they "give" you are chargeable. I was being stashed for OHARP in Orlando, but had to check in at NRD Jax. My mom and brother were in town for the commissioning, so we stayed the night, then drove home Saturday. I checked in to NRD Jax on Monday and sure enough, they charged me for leave on that weekend because due to its proximity, I was expected to leave P-cola and check in at Jax that day.

Anytime you take after your travel days from RI to P-cola will be charged leave. Just keep that in mind.

Yeah, I should have made that clear. The leave they give you gets charged and that 28 week wait for NFOs will be filled with OHARP, TAD or a fun stash job of some type. Right now it looks like they're hurting for stash Ensigns all over Pensacola, so you'd more than likely get a nice admin job somewhere.

Taught sailing one day a week to AOCS candidates on the Hermes (44 foot ex-drug runner). Hung around on the boat and did PM for an hour or two in the morning otherwise for four months waiting for VT-10. Don't even know if the boat's around anymore with OCS gone from NPA.

No more boats at OCS. No more pistol quals at OCS. No more obstacle course at OCS. Hell, I don't even remember doing anything there!

Yeah, Class 13-07 had the honor of being the first class that didn't get to do pistol quals. We look pretty good in our whites with that National Defense Medal gleaming in the sun all by itself.

Are the classes behind you doing pistol quals?

Will OCS grads in aviation do a pistol qual at some point in their career? They do carry a pistol afterall.
